Azad fighting toughest election of his political career | Future of Congress at stake | | Rustam JAMMU, Apr 15: The very future of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, like in the rest of the country, is at stake. At the national level, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are facing the heat. All the pollsters have predicted doom for the Congress party across the country with most of them suggesting that the Congress's tally this time would be the lowest: It might not cross the 100 mark. In Jammu province, the Congress is also fighting the toughest ever election. Its stakes are very high - very high all the more because Union Health Minister and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is contesting election from the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary constituency. He is pitted against the BJP candidate Jitendra Singh. The PDP, JKNPP and the BSP candidates are also in the fray, but the contest is basically between the Congress heavy weight and the BJP candidate. Both the Congress and the BJP have been putting in all efforts to woo the voters. Three national BJP leaders, including party president Rajnath Singh, party's PM candidate Narendra Modi and actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna have campaigned for the BJP candidate. Ghulam Nabi Azad, along with all the state Congress leaders and the entire NC leadership, including from the Kashmir valley, has also been crisscrossing the constituency to woo the voters and ensure his success. What has added to the worries of the Congress election managers was the high voter turn out in Jammu on April 10. Over 71 per cent voters exercised their franchise. Almost all the Jammu-based Congress leaders and all the Congress and NC ministers have upped the ante and taking on the BJP. Convinced that the contest is tough and the Modi factor is very much there in the constituency, Azad involved AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi and actor Raj Babbar in his election campaign so that his electoral chances were improved. Rahul addressed a rally at Doda on April 12 and Babbar, along with Azad, JKPCC president Saif-ud-Din Soz and many others, campaigned for the party candidate on April 14. The Congress leadership knows what the victory or defeat of the party in this constituency means. Victory would mean the survival of the Congress and defeat would mean end of the Congress in Jammu province and, hence, an intense campaigning in the constituency. |
