Jammu, Apr 15 : Directorate of Tourism Jammu added one more feather in its basket of failures and flop shows whcih it organizes with high doze of publicity packaged with colour of festivities in store for the people. This time it dawned upon the concerned authorities to organize Baisakhi Mela at historic Mubarak Mandi complex, only to disappoint visitors.
For the Mela instead of mesmerizing event turned out to be a whole messy affair with mismanagement on all fronts, thanks to oragnizers who did not bother to take care of even basic requirements while making arrangements for such a show of large scale.
The Mela which stretched for five days had neither any security arrangements in place nor proper seating capacity for thousands of visitors who thronged the site. Surprisngly, the Toursim Department had not even informed the local Police officers about the Mela, which is a mandatory measure for ensuring order at any public event. Consistent traffic jams which continued for long stretches, confusion and chaos on account of congested venue and shabby scenes of piled up disposable stuff thrown out by public in open.....were all there on the Mela site that caused mess and presented ugly look to the proceedings. Envisioning of any new show in the heart of the city amid historic heritage complex is nothing wrong, rather a good step to let people of Jammu enjoy and experience all elements of Mela in any rural area, coinciding with festival like Baisakhi. However, oragnizing it without proper thought and care turns the events chaotic and defeats the entire purpose. This is what turned out with Baisakhi Mela. As the area is too congested to allow movement of vehicles, heavy traffic jams almost blocked the venue to visitors Traffic jams with haphazardly parked vehicles was on a stretch beginning from radio Station Chowk right up to the Mubarak Mandi complex. This happened, despite an order issued few days back that all vehicles should be lifted and area cleaned up for the Mela.
This was however observed in total breach, even by the concerned authorities which allowed VIP vehicles, this time families of bureacrats and officials, as MCC is in place for the political bosses to be chief guests or be entertained in any function as VVIP. As found in all Melas, there were craft stalls and food stalls for the visitors which people relished. What turned it ugly was absence of a single dust bin in the area which made people throw the disposal containers on the ground itself . There was no arrangement for fire brigade team even as thousands of visitors thronged the Mela , which could have invited any trouble at any given point of time. Moreover, Tourism department did not deem it proper to inform the police and have some cops at the venue , something which was stunningly revealed by the Police department to ET. Lack of vision was also reflected in choice of venue by the Directorate of toursim in choosing a portion of the platform in central park for presentation of culturla programmes and using part of it for audience, which created utter chaos as the number of visitors outnumbered far more than what was the sitting capacity of just 200-300 people.
VVIPs and their families were however well served both in terms of making them seated comfortably in the front row and offering some light refreshments by the Heritage Society. With such chaotic arranegments in place, one wonders what and for whom the Tourism department had envisioned this Mela
