With Ramadan all set to end, political activities likely to gain momentum in state | | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, July 27: As the holy month of Ramadan is coming to a close the political parties of the state are all set to gear up their activities since the assembly elections are just few months away. In the coming days people of the state more so Kashmir are all set to witness an increase in the political activities. As the Peoples Democratic Party has almost finalized and published its list for the upcoming assembly elections it is quite possible that the party may take lead in the holding of public meetings and allied functions. The party leaders are all set to gear up and pose a challenge to their opponents especially in seats being held by National Conference and Congress. National Conference has so far announced mandate for the 46 seats of the state and the party has reposed faith in the 'tried' lot. National Conference working President, Omar Abdullah has addressed some rallies in the past couple of weeks, but the momentum is yet to be gained. The other leaders are yet to move out and address the people and this may be possible in the coming weeks or so. Congress party which is yet to announce mandate for the assembly elections has a lot to do as far as elections are concerned. The party has to first announce the names of candidates and then they will have to organize public rallies in order to galvanize the public support. The party would have to re-double its efforts in order to reach out to the people in order to seek votes. Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) was the only mainstream party which was very active during the month of July. The party organized many functions wherein people joined the party in presence of some senior party leaders. Under its Mission 44+ programme the party is contemplating to organize election rallies in many parts of state over the next couple of months. Political experts say that with assembly elections slated for October-November the upcoming months would be hectic for the political parties. Leaders of mainstream political parties in order to reach out to electorate would be holding election rallies in both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions of the state. Interestingly, the political activities are yet to gather momentum in Jammu and Ladakh despite the fact both these regions have great numbers of non-Muslim population. Maybe, the political parties are waiting for the Eid-ul-Fitr to be celebrated so that they give real fillip to the election related activities. The holding of election rallies puts the security agencies on tenterhooks as they have to ensure that no harm whatsoever is caused to the politicians addressing the election rallies. In the past many violent incidents have taken place on the eve of elections and same cannot be ruled out in the run-up to the 2014 assembly elections. Bloody and gory incidents were witnessed in the past in the run-up to the elections with many people losing their lives. The security agencies would have to work hard so as to minimize the casualties this time around. |
