Where is Mustafa Kamaal?

Early times Report

JAMMU, July 27: Where is the outspoken NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal? "Has he gone in hibernation? Is he not contesting the assembly election this time? Is he not happy with the decision of NC president Farooq Abdullah and NC working president Omar Abdullah to appoint Ali Mohammad Sagar as party's general secretary? Are the three Abdullahs - Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mustafa Kamaal - on the same page as far as the party affairs are concerned? These are some of the questions the people have been asking for days now. These are very relevant questions. After all, Mustafa Kamaal, who used to speak and issue strong statements almost everyday, has not spoken nor issued any statement for quite sometime now. Besides, reports emanating from the Valley nowhere suggest that he is busy with party work calculated to help the party do well in the assembly elections, due in a few months. On the contrary, reports suggest that four persons who have become somewhat active are Omar Abdullah, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Tanvir Sadiq and Junaid Mattoo. It appears Mustafa Kamaal is not happy with the style of functioning of Omar Abdullah, as also with the role assigned to Sagar, Sadiq and Mattoo. Sadiq is Political Secretary to Omar Abdullah and Mattoo is the party's spokesperson.
According to JKLF chief Yasin Malik, Mattoo was a JKLF activist and he joined the NC to fulfill his political ambitions. It also appears that Mustafa Kamaal has been upset by the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha. After the Lok Sabha election in Anantnag, where Mehboob Beg was the party candidate, Mustafa Kamaal had accused the local Congress leadership of working against the coalition's candidate. He had charged them with not transferring the Congress votes to Mehboob Beg. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti contested election against Mehboob Beg and she won with a huge margin. Instead of supporting Kamaal, Farooq Abdullah had openly snubbed his brother and commended the Congress' role in the election. Besides, Mehboob Beg himself had come forward to contradict Mustafa Kamaal. He claimed that the Congress worked very sincerely for him in the Lok Sabha election. It was perhaps this repeated snubbing that angered Mustafa Kamaal to the extent that he thought it proper to go into hibernation or keep mum. Earlier also, Farooq Abdullah had publicly snubbed Mustafa Kamaal on several occasions. The reason was that Kamaal had been attacking the local Congress leadership as well as Rahul Gandhi and creating problems for the coalition. Even Omar Abdullah had on a few occasions dissociated himself from the statements issued or made by Mustafa Kamaal, especially statements against the Congress.
Kamaal should have been happy after July 20, when Omar Abdullah tore into the Congress leadership and revealed that he told Sonia Gandhi in the second week of July that the NC had decided to go alone in the coming Assembly election, but it has not happened. Kamaal, it needs to be underlined, had all along opposed pre-poll alliance with the Congress. So much so, he had once accused Omar Abdullah of not taking the party into confidence before making a policy statement that he wanted pre-poll alliance with the Congress to keep the PDP out of power. That Kamaal has not made any comment on the Omar Abdullah's July 20 announcement that the NC would contest the Assembly election separately does suggest the existence of some very serious differences between him and others in the party, especially Omar Abdullah and members of his kitchen cabinet. His silence and conspicuous absence from the Kashmir's political scene could be viewed in this context.
