Failed, desperate NC out to divide Jammu Pradesh | Pirpanjal Hill Development Council | | Neha JAMMU, July 28: The National Conference, which was rejected by the people across the state in the just-held Lok Sabha elections and which has been abandoned by the equally desperate Congress, has unleashed a campaign which, if not punctured right now, would culminate in the division of Jammu province. It has unleashed forces in the erstwhile Doda district and Poonch-Rajouri area which are leaving no stone unturned to polarize and communalize the political scene in these areas, where the Muslims are quite numerous. On the one hand, they have been attacking India, saying it eroded the state's special status over the period to integrate the state into India, and, on the other hand, they have been working for the division of Jammu province on religious and ethnic lines. In the erstwhile Doda district, the NC leaders and cadres, like many others, are motivating members of the majority community to demand autonomous Chenab valley development council completely overlooking the fact that the non-Muslims, who constitute almost half of the population in the area, are vehemently opposed to this atrocious and communal demand. There exists no such Valley as Chenab valley in the erstwhile Doda district. Similarly, in the sensitive and border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, the votaries of the two-nation theory are playing dangerous games hoping their indulgence in such games would help the NC win a few seats in the coming Assembly elections. Only the other day, the sitting MLC and Deputy Chairman of Legislative Council and the NC candidate from Mendhar Assembly constituency Javed Rana urged the people to vote for the NC to achieve Pirpanjal Hill Development Council. "If the people support the NC in the Pirpanjal region, the party will constitute Pirpanjal development Council for the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch," the Gujjar leader Rana said while addressing his supporters at Jaraanwali Gali, Gursai, Ari, Harni and so on. Bulk of Doda district is also part of Pirpanjal mountain. What Rana said was not expected of him being a Gujjar leader. After all, it was India which granted the Gujjar and Bakerwal Muslims the status of Scheduled Tribe way back in 1991 to improve their social, economic and political condition. The Government of India took this step overlooking the opposition of the Kashmiri leaders, including the NC and the Congress leaders. His Pirpanjal Hill Development Council promise was all the more disturbing because his whole approach was sectarian and divisive and was negation of the oft-repeated claim of the Gujjar leadership that it had consistently helped New Delhi defeat the Pakistani onslaughts and stood for secular values. His slogan for Pirpanjal Hill Development Council was also intriguing because it is the NC and similar other parties in Kashmir which always scuttled their demand for political reservation. The Gujjar leadership would do well to understand the NC's devious game-plan and rein in forces represented by Rana. It would be in their long-term interest. The Gujjars cannot and must not make common cause with those who always ditched them and harmed their socio-economic and political interests. |
