One Eid eve, Baramulla craves for food

Syed Tahir Bukhari

BARAMULLA, July 28: In spite of repeated announcements by the government about availability of rations during the holy month of Ramadhan, and especially on the Eve of Eid-Ul Fiter, there is acute deficiency of food in most of the rural areas of Baramulla district in north Kashmir. According to local residents of far flung areas of Nilser, Shumlaran, Kandi, Banji, Rajpora, and Verinar in north Kashmir's Baramulla district are without stock for the past one months, forcing people to purchase rice, flour and sugar from the open market. People allege the essentials meant for public are supplied to blue eyed persons. Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Kandi said that, most of the ration depots are empty and people have to buy food grains at exorbitant prices from the open market. "There is no control on prices either and government is almost non-existent everywhere," "Shortage of food is becoming a major cause of concern in Kashmir. While special measures were taken in other regions of the state as well as in the country during the holy month of Ramadhan, but no attention is being paid to Jammu and Kashmir Sheikh complained. Another local of Kandi Riyaz Ahmad said that, it is only we the people who are suffering from Ration, like Sugar, Rice and Flour and government seems least bothered even to inquire about the situation. Similarly, in other parts of Baramulla district, most people were left to fend for themselves with the Public Distribution system almost completely collapsed. "Ration and other food items are available with the department but ironically it is not being allocated and distributed. "Influential persons approach top officials of CA&PD and get the ration, sugar, flour and other items from them," Ahmad alleged. He said that, unfortunately huge quantities of essential commodities are first supplied to top Bureaucrats and influential persons in the district and wastage remains for common masses. Sources from other parts of Baramulla District said that, "the government instead of making handsome money they should try to reach out to people during these holy days and take special measures for solution of this grave problem. However top official of CAPD, on anonymity condition said that, "only 50- 60 kilograms of sugar were supplied to the Bureaucrat," "The allocation is same and the ration cards are same but it is only mismanagement which leaves people fuming, and there are some people who are doing it deliberately and government has to take appropriate measures to ensure adequate and timely supply of ration to the people he said.
