| Mercury plunges as rains lash Valley | | Wind, hailstorm creates havoc; one killed, several injured | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 16 : Mercury plunged as rains brought relief from blistering heat in Kashmir Valley, however the flash floods, hail and wind storm not only caused damages to property, but also caused the death of a farmer in South Kashmir.
The rains lashed Kashmir Valley whole Friday night. With the rainfall, mercury plunged giving respite to the people. A Met department spokesperson said that weather will remain mainly dry over the state during the next 24 hours. However, there could be scattered rain or thundershowers during the subsequent days.
Dry weather coupled with four to five degree above normal maximum and minimum temperatures during the past three weeks has resulted in increase in the heat wave in the valley, forcing people to use fans coolers and air-conditioners.
With the rainfall and decrease in temperatures, people on Saturday were seen wearing warm garments.
Reports said that there was huge rush of tourist at tourist destinations, including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Yusmarg and Deksum where weather remained pleasant. With the continuous rainfall, the streets of Srinagar city as usual were seen water logged as a result the commuters and people faced lot of inconvenience.
Police sources said that incessant rains invited flash flood in some parts of South Kashmir's Pulwama district claiming the life of a farmer who was washed off by flash flood in Karim Abad village. Police identified the deceased as Muhammad Yasin Wani son of Ghulam Ahmed.
An Alto vehicle (JK18-1393) was completely damaged when it came under a tree that was uprooted due to heavy wind storm outside District Hospital Kulgam. However, the owner of the vehicle Doctor Fayaz Ahmed Shaksaz escaped unhurt.
Zubida Akhtar wife of Abdul Rashid Shah resident of Furah Mir Bazar Qazigund sustained serious injuries when she came under the debris of roof top damaged due to windstorm. She was shifted in serious condition to nearby hospital.
Reports said that due to heavy hail storm in different parts of South Kashmir's Kulgam district including Yaripora, Home Shali Bugh and Hangal Bas areas heavy damage to crops and property was witnessed. "The windstorm created in dozens of villages of Kulgam, damaging at least 100 structures," police said. |
