Kamaal may be NC's candidate for Ganderbal | Omar not sure of his victory? | | Rustam JAMMU, Aug 16: On August 15, NC working president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attacked commentators and said it was for the people to determine his fate as well as the fate of his party. He announced that he was the party's chief ministerial candidate and was sure that he would form the next government. He made these remarks during his Independence Day address at Srinagar and also announced five per cent reservation for the Pathowari-speaking people and two per cent for Other Backward Classes. One doesn't know if he took the Congress leadership into confidence before making this policy statement. It is also not clear at whose cost he would give reservation to these segments of society. Omar Abdullah has been doing all that he could to win over the estranged people. It is a different issue whether or not his efforts would bear fruit. His problem is not just the estrangement of the people; his problems are many. He, for instance, is in search of a very safe seat, but he is not finding it. Ganderbal which he represents at present in the assembly is a very difficult seat for him and he believes that the people of this constituency could replicate 2002. In 2002, they had defeated Omar Abdullah. Members of his coterie had reportedly selected two "safe" constituencies for him. One was Ganderbal, which Omar Abdullah's uncle Mustafa Kamaal right now represents in the assembly, and the other was Sonawar. A recent report from Srinagar had said that his men wanted him to contest from both these constituencies and Mustafa Kamaal might not be repeated in the Ganderbal constituency. The report had angered Kamaal. A day after this report appeared in a section of the Kashmiri press, he contested that he was not contesting the assembly election this time. He was very much in the race was his reaction. At the same time, he had said that it was for the parliamentary board to take a final decision. But he made it clear that he wished to seek re-election from the Ganderbal constituency. In fact, another report appeared in a section of Kashmiri press that claimed that Kamaal might resign from the party. The report was based on the claim made by senior NC leader and former Lok Sabha member Abdul Rasheed Shaheen. Shaheen is a bitter critic of Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah and he holds them responsible for the destruction of the NC. It now appears that the parliamentary board of the party has finally decided to urge Omar Abdullah from Sonawar constituency. A report has said that some top NC leaders, who met here under the chairmanship party president Farooq Abdullah on August 15, urged Omar Abdullah to contest from Sonawar. As a matter of fact, the report said some top leaders urged Omar Abdullah "not to change his mind of fighting the Assembly polls from Sonwar". If what the report said is correct, than it can be said that Omar Abdullah has still not made up his mind to contest from Sonawar constituency. In other words, he is not confident of his victory in this constituency, which, according to his own men, is very safe. What an irony! |
