Srinagar, Aug 16: The Kashmir unit of Bahartiya Janta Party hoisting the national flag upside down on the occasion of the Independence -Day at its party headquarters in the summer capital has caused major embarrassment to the party in the Valley.
The BJP workers hoisted the tricolour at the Rajbagh office of the party. However, the flag was hoisted with the green strip on the top, instead of the saffron strip.
"It was a mistake that should not have taken place. The party has taken note of the matter," the Kashmir based spokesman of the party told reporters soon after the function.
Sources said that soon after the news broke out and top BJP leaders came to know about the issue. They pulled up the people handling the Kashmir affairs of the party and sought an explanation from the BJP leaders who were present on the occasion. "This is a grave mistake which should not have happened," BJP leaders are understood to have told the people associated with the state unit of the party.
Sources said that the national flag was unfurled by the BJP's Srinagar district president Ali Mohammad Mir in presence of scores of party workers and leaders. "Irony is that even after hoisting the national flag BJP leaders did not realize their mistake for quite some time," they said.
A BJP insider said, "Tricolor being hoisted upside down was pointed out by the media incharge of the party unit Altaf Thakur, who immediately set the things right and apologized for the mistake."
Sources said that BJP high command has ordered high level probe into the matter and a few leaders from Kashmir were summoned to Jammu today to clear their stand on the issue. " I have been asked to submit a detailed report about the matter," said a party leader, camping in Jammu.
When Early Times contacted the Srinagar district president of the BJP unit Ali Mohammad Mir, he regretted the "inadvertent error." "It was not a deliberate attempt it just happened in a jiffy. We set the things right within a few minutes."
Mir said, "we have been hoisting the national flag in Kashmir for the past 15-years. Tiranaga Hamari Shaan Hain Hamari Jaan Hain (Tricolour is our pride and honour we can never let it down."
Mir said the BJP workers in Kashmir safeguarded the "sanctity" of the tricolor when militancy was at peak in Kashmir. "Media has made a mountain out of mole hill," he said.
Mir said, "Tricolor was unfurled upside down at three places across India on Friday. No one made an issue of it. Everyone realized it was an inadvertent mistake and rectified it."
