Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 16: National Conference is now vertically split after Omar Abdullah had announced himself as the chief ministerial candidate. The senior leaders of the party have conveyed their displeasure to the party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, who reportedly is disturbed and annoyed with this announcement of his son.
"I am hopeful that the next government will be headed by me," Omar had told a reporter on Friday.
Omar made this statement in an attempt to quell the voices of the discontent in the party, which had always been critical of his functioning.
"We had just lost all three seats of the parliament. And, more importantly it's for the first time the party lost Srinagar seat which was especially most shocking and embarrassing for Dr Farooq. Instead of taking remedial measures, Omar is showcasing himself as the front leader and thus ensuring more defeats for the party, which can't be accepted," said a senior leader, of the NC, wishing not to be named.
The announcement has opened up more serious differences not in the party but even within the party. Dr Farooq had reportedly given way to the Omar in the 2008 and party sources said he is unlikely to do it again now.
"Dr Sahib gave in after much pressure both from Congress and family at that time. Now Congress is not calling shots and even party is not going to take Omar after he had failed considerably. The party's last hope is Dr Farooq and only if he is projected as the CM, it is the last bet of the party to regroup at the crucial test of its history," said a senior NC cabinet minister, who had been feeling alienated and pushed to the corners in the Omar government.'
According to the party sources, Dr Farooq is likely to convene a meeting of the party's parliamentary board and discuss the issue. Sources, said even though Dr Farooq is not in the best of the health, he could make appearances in the elections to send a message that he is ready for the job. Party insiders said it is what the party workers expect him to and if Omar is made to call the shots then it would be all over for the party.
