1000 hospitalized after drinking contaminated water | Police register FIR against PHE Deptt | | Fazal Khan Srinagar, Aug 16: Police on Saturday registered a FIR against the PHE department for supplying contaminated water to residents of Trehgam in frontier district of Kupwara. Sources told Early Times that police had taken the cognizance of the matter last week after more than 1000 people from Trehgam area were hospitalized. "After doctors diagnosed that water-borne disease had broken out in the area, the Chief Medical Officer sent the water samples for investigations," sources said. They said that test report, which was received this afternoon, stated that quality of the water consumed by the residents of Trehgam and adjoining areas was poor and it was "not fit for the human consumption." The CMO forwarded the test report to the Police, which had already received a written complaint against the PHE officials. Police later registered a FIR No. 64/2014 under sections 270,277 and also under 5/7 ESMA against the employees of the PHE department. "We have taken up the investigations and are exploring the all possible angles," a police official said. Reports said that after consuming the contaminated water around 300 people from Zirhama area suffered from dehydration and had to be admitted in the nearby Primary Health Centre. But the toll later reached to 1000 with the medical authorities witnessing tough time in handling the patients. The infected inhabitants were later admitted in four different health centres of Kupwara district. |
