Army rescue operation on in flood-hit Kashmir, thousands rescued | Rain continues to create havoc | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 6 : From past three days, braving all odds, Army has rescued thousands of people all across Jammu and Kashmir who were trapped in flood-hit areas. The Army provided relief and first aid to the affected people but also supplied rescue boats, vehicles and JCB's in different areas which were badly hit by floods.An Army official told CNS that non-stop efforts are on to extricate people caught in critical conditions while thousands of people have already been shifted to safer places. Army's 13 RR is operating in Sonawari belt of District Bandipora and so far it has evacuated the people from Banyari, Mukhdamyari, Gundjagir, Sodanara, Naidkahi, Zinipora, Naninara Sumbal, Shilwat, Kanyari, Ganistan, Asham, Markundal, Khatpora, Shahgund and Arampora to safer places. Locals while hailing the efforts of Army thanked them for making arrangements for food and medical aid for them at 3 Sector Mansbal. Army also shifted the residents of Nowgam Zalpora to Higher Secondary School Gund Nowgam. A senior official told CNS that due to unprecedented rainfall in the past 72 hours there has been heavy inundation of low lying areas astride the Jhelum and others rivers in Kashmir valley. "Mission Sahayta has been launched by the army to rescue people from critically affected areas, especially where lives were at risk". More than 50 army columns were pressed into service across the valley and they have been launched along the engineer boats. Their teams putting themselves at great risk have rescued more than 1500 peoples. The Army columns have also swung into action in and around their operating bases and provided relief and rescue to numerous other people in the valley, the official said. According to Officials, the army has rescued approx 1800 people from Bemina, Panderthan and Lasjan areas of Srinagar city. All but 300 civilians have been evacuated from areas around Sopore and Pattan in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. The Army has also rescued 800 people from all across the area of Pampore, Kakpora, Khanabal, Anantnag and kulgam. Sources told CNS that Army's1RR is operating 8 columns in Sangam, Hasan Pura Bagh, Shamsipura, Turktachlu, Khudwani, Ledwani, Howrah and Quimoh villages of South Kashmir districts. Around 100 members belonging to 15 families in Turktachlu and Shamsipura were rescued and shifted to unaffected villages. Army also supplied hundreds of sand bags to affected villages. 25 children and 30 adults were also rescued using tyres, tubes, ropes at Muslim Mohalla, KP road in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. |
