Srinagar, Sept 6: Kashmir has been reeling under darkness from the day incessant rains hit the Valley. Power Development Department today claimed that it has suffered an estimated loss of around Rs 20 crore and hundreds of transformers and receiving stations have been submerged in south and central Kashmir.
Talking to Early Times Chief Engineer Power Development Department Bashir Ahmed Khan said, "Floods have wrecked havoc in south and central Kashmir. We have disconnected the power in the areas which have been hit by the floods as many lines are submerged."
He claimed that PDD has suffered losses worth Rs 20 crore. "This is just an initial estimate, losses can be on the higher side," Khan added.
The Chief Engineer said that 400 KV line Kishenpora line, which connects Kashmir with northern grid, is safe. "We have suffered losses at local level. If the water levels don't recede and weather fails to improve then there is every possibility of situation turning from bad to worse," he added.
Sources said that flash floods hitting Kashmir caught the PDD napping. "Had the department anticipated trouble situation would not have been so grim. It took officials at least two days to understand that disaster has struck. By the time action plans were formulated it was too late," said a source.
He said it can take a few months for PDD to set the things right. "It's not going to be an easy task for the PDD to restore normalcy," the source added.
An official of the PDD who wished not to be named said that Meteorological department had issued the weather advisory a week before. "It's unfortunate that entire official machinery, including PDD, took the advisory lightly and no preparations were made in advance to handle the emerging situation," the official said. "Now everyone is beating his chest and we are crying over split milk."
Meanwhile residents of many areas in Srinagar said that they are facing immense hardships as taps are running dry and electricity has been snapped off. "Authorities are claiming that they are doing their best to ensure that people don't suffer, on ground their claims have turned out to be a hoax as nothing is being done practically," said Azhar Qadri of Sanat Nagar.
Locals said that many water supply plants have turned defunct and muddy water without any treatment is being supplied to people.
An official of the PHE department while talking to Early Times said, "We cannot do anything till electricity is restored. Most infiltration plants have turned defunct. We are helpless.
