Tawi, Chenab spell disaster in Jammu region; toll reaches 150

JAMMU, Sept 6: Incessant rains coupled with flash floods have consumed more than 150 precious lives in Jammu region besides causing extensive damage to the private property, government buildings, vital bridges, roads and religious places.
The toll in the Jammu region has risen to 120 following the death of 14 people in a landslide in Rajouri on Friday, while many more are missing.
Both the Chenab and Tawi rivers were flowing above the danger mark today morning, with three bridges on Tawi were closed for traffic as they were declared unsafe, officials said. One, built in May, was later washed away. A bridge over the Chenab in Akhnoor was closed on Friday.
Revenue Secr5etary Vinod Koul earlier said that 390 villages in the Valley were submerged and 1,225 partially affected while at least 1,000 villages were affected in Jammu region.
23 fresh casualties were reported today from Udhampur, Reasi, Poonch and Ramban districts with administration admitting of not being aware about the exact loss of life across Jammu region. They said that the exact figure of dead would be available only after the rain stops and rescue operation is launched in full swing. Actual loss assessment would be possible only after team are sent to areas which have become inaccessible due to floods and landslides.
In the fresh incidents, 13 people lost their lives and one woman was critically injured in two incidents of house collapse in Udhampur district today. In the first incident, six members were killed when a house collapsed in Rakha Jaganoo area of Ramnagar Tehsil in Udhampur district.
They have been identified as Gulzar Begum wife of Ghulam Hassan, Riyaz Ahmed son of Ghulam Hassan, Rashida Begum wife of Mohammed Khalid, Nazia daughter of Mohamed Khalid, Mashroom daughter of Mohamed Shafi and Trishna wife of Mohamed Shafi, all resident of Rakh Jaganoo .
In the second incident, two children died and their mother was critically injured when their house collapsed in Rakh badali in Udhampur today. Deceased have been identified as Ravi Kumar (05) son of Sanjay Kumar and his sister Pooja Devi (03) resident of Badali Rakh Udhampur. One injured in the incident identified as Krishna Devi wife of Sanjay Kumar is being treated at district hospital Udhampur.
In another incident, one woman and her child died when their house in Manthal area of Udhampur district on Jammu-Srinagar highway collapsed. The two have been identified as Roma Devi (48) wife of Prem Chand and her six years old son Mohan Lal. Besides, around 249 residential houses were fully damaged while 98 were partially damaged.
112 livestock died due to incessant rains and floods across the Udhampur district. Meanwhile, hundreds of people living near bank of Birma river have been shifted to safer places after the area was flooded due to heavy downpour. Train movement on the Jammu-Katra-Udhampur railway route has also been disrupted by landslides and floods. The Shri Shakti train has been stranded at the Ramnagar station due to water logging on track and in the tunnels.
Due to incessant rains and floods in the District Doda, one child lost her life and 2 persons suffered injuries in different regions of District Doda. 362 Houses have suffered damages. These include 102 fully damaged and 260 partially damaged houses. 97 cow sheds have also suffered extensive damages. The girl child aged 3 ½ years namely Priya daughter of Santosh Singh, resident of Kotli in Banjal area of District Doda died due to electrocution.
Those injred in the incident include 18 years old Haqikat Singh son of Walayat Singh, resident of village Chakka in Tehsil Kastigarh. He was injured due to falling of boulders in Chill Nallah and has been shifted to GMC Jammu. Sukhvinder Singh a GREF Employee (JE) also suffered injuries at Ragi Nallah, while clearing slides and has been admitted to District Hospital Doda.
7 people lost their lives in Poonch District while the number of structures damaged completely or partially has touched more than 1000. Four more bodies were recovered from Thursday's bus mishap in which 63 members of marriage party were washed away in Rajouri district, SSP Rajouri Mubashir Latifi said, adding, 33 bodies have been recovered so far of the total 63.
2 people lost their lives in Ramban district while 1 was reported Reasi district. Rescue teams in Kathua district today rescued six persons from village Bhambarwan. They had got trapped in Ujh River under the jurisdiction of police station Rajbagh in Tehsil Hiranagar.
After dedicated efforts police teams succeeded in rescuing Gulshan Bano, Shamim Begum, Talib Hussain, Mushraff Hussain, Ulfat Bano and Abdul Karim; all resident of village Bhambarwan.Other than this, the rescue teams shifted families from village Spaalmaa and Chakra comprising of 53 persons affected in the flood area.
There are reports of damage to 52 houses due to continuous heavy rainfall. District Police administration had directed all the police sub-ordinate units of the district to remain extra vigilant to meet out any eventuality arise out of floods and keep on educating the people to avoid any mishap.
As many as 2,500 villages have been affected by the floods and 450 villages have marooned. 8 teams of NDRF and 6 helicopters of IAF have been pressed in rescue and relief operations and they are doing a commendable job.
As many as 9,000 people were rescued in various areas in Jammu by teams of Army and IAF teams till now with 100 columns (75-100 personnel each) of troops and Air Force helicopters taking part in the operations in the state.
