Traffic continues to remain disrupted, all highways closed | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 6: Traffic on ever busy Srinagar-Jammu National Highway NH-1, Jammu-Poonch, Doda-Kishtwar remained suspended today due to landslides and flood at many places, triggered by heavy rains in the region. The traffic on Jammu-Pathankote NH also got partially affected due to flash flood in a local rivulet that damaged the main bridge connecting Samba and Kathua Districts here. Official sources said Srinagar-Jammu NH remained closed for the fourth day today due to landslides and flood at many places following heavy rain during the past five days. All the four bridges on Tawi river were closed for vehicles as the water level crossed the danger mark. They said it was still raining, hampering the landslide clearance operations by Border Roads Organisation, who are responsible for the maintenance of the highway. "Meanwhile, due to the land and mud slides for heavy rains in twin border districts -- Rajouri and Poonch -- the traffic remained affected on the Jammu-Poonch road, police sources said. On the flash floods that caused damage to the bridge connecting Samba and Kathua district, SSP Kathua Mohan Lal said one tube of the bridge is secured for the traffic and stranded vehicles are being cleared through the single tube. He also said the police rescue teams were continuing their rescue operations and had rescued six people from the River Ujh. The incessant rains in Jammu region has got adversely affected since September 3 following heavy downpour resulting into landslides, sludge slides and sinking of road patches on major road links across the state. |
