Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 6: Putting a question mark on working of Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) and Public Works Department (PWD), more than 100 bridges have collapsed during the last four days across Jammu region.
Though the two agencies which constructed these bridges have already begun saying that unprecedented floods led to collapse of bridges but those in the field of engineering are not ready to buy their argument. Such was the situation that state administration had to stop traffic over all the seven bridges on River Tawi. Even the movement over Akhnoor Bridge was restricted for some hours. The three vital bridges which cater to most of the traffic in Jammu city were closed in the wee hours of morning for traffic. Authorities shared with Early Times that they feared the bridges would collapse any moment and lead to major catastrophe. They said that when the new bridge collapsed near Bhagwati Nagar and bridge over Balli Nallah too could not bear the pressure of water, they decided not to risk allowing plying of traffic over old Tawi Bridge and Sher-e-Kashmir Bridge.
They further said that old Tawi Bridge too has suffered some damage but it is minor and would have no impact on the plying of traffic. Officials further said that the collapse of Balli Nallah Bridge alongwith several other vital bridges forced them to take extreme precautionary measures. They maintained that such has been the work of PWD and ERA that walls constructed alongwith various routes have come down.
Sources further said that more than 100 bridges have collapsed across Jammu region with Poonch being the major sufferer with 25 bridges. This includes some of the extremely important bridges. The much talked about four lane National Highway being constructed by NHAI too has suffered extensive damages with virtually entire road having been turned into a death trap.
