As public transport goes off early people remain stranded for hours in Srinagar | | | Majid Nabi SRINAGAR, Sept 6: Besides back- breaking rise on essential commodities, people in Kashmir also complained of irksome transport services as the transporters for the past five days at will go off the roads causing difficulties to the commuters. Residents at many city areas claimed that public transport fade away from the roads hours before dusk and blamed the authorities for helplessly watching the chaotic circumstances. "This is an irony that the authorities are acting as mute spectators over the plight of the people who are stranded on roads for hours in absence of public transport vehicles. It seems that the authorities are least bothered to look into the difficulties being faced by the people on all fronts that too when entire valley is reeling under the disastrous circumstances," said Mohammad Tayib Khan a commuter from Hazratbal area of the city who along with his four year old daughter was waiting for bus near Telegraph Office here. Residents complained that the transporters had called off the bus services for unknown reason on many routes of the city causing huge inconvenience to the office going people who had to reach their respective workplaces in the wake of emergency declared by the government after floods stormed the valley. Traveling in public transport for residents of Srinagar is no less than a curse given the humiliation, hardships, trouble and delays they are daily confronting with. Serious attention is still awaited to its flawed transport system as the commuters traveling from city outskirts are facing lot of troubles who appealed the traffic authorities in Srinagar to ensure smooth service of transport in the city. Observably, roads had worn a deserted look in the absence of public transport while the authority seems to be in slumbers to deal with the issue. Since last four days there has been less number of public transport vehicles on the roads; the buses that ply during day also go off roads early in the evening leaving the passengers stranded on the roads for hours together," Irshad Ahmad another stranded commuter from Harwan on the city outskirts said. Residents of areas like Harwan, Dargah, Natipora, Sanat Nagar, Soura, Parimpora and Chatterhama are the worst hit of unnecessary stoppage of public transport. "This is the government which has given everyone be it traders or transporters a free hand to take people for a ride. People in our area have decided to halt the movement of public transport in protest in case the drivers associations does not direct transporters to resume services at the earliest," Showkat Ahmad Laway an agitated resident of Chatterhama told Early Times. |
