India & Pak should stop fiddling with crackers | | |
If Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was sincere in offering assistance to Pakistan in meeting challenges posed by severe floods, Islamabad has simply misinterpreted Modi’s offer. It did so on two counts.First,as Islamabad believes, Modi referred to Pakistan occupied Kashmir while referring to flood devastation caused to areas across the LOC. Secondly,Islamabad expected Modi to say that he was ready to help the Government across the LOC for meeting challenges posed by floods in Pakistan administered Kashmir or Azad Kashmir.Responding to Narendra Modi’s offer to help its flood victims, the Pakistan Government has responded with a tit-for-tat gesture of offering assistance to victims in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir. Both sides have been ravaged by floods that have killed over 200 people as rivers burst their banks after heavy rain. Prime Minister Modi had in a letter to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on Sunday, written, "It is a matter of great distress that the retreating monsoon rains have played havoc in many parts of our two countries. In this hour of need, I offer any assistance that you may need in the relief efforts that will be undertaken by the government of Pakistan. Modi had gone to the extent of telling Nawaz Sharif that India’s resources were at his(Sharif’s) disposal.
Acknowledging Prime Minister Modi's letter, Prime Minister Sharif said, "Such solidarity in the face of crisis is indeed valuable." The Pakistani Prime Minister reciprocated with an offer to "lend a helping hand in any way possible." Both prime ministers flew over their respective flood-hit areas over the weekend to review the extent to the flooding even as relief and rescue operations continue at a brisk pace.Well Nawaz Sharif has replied Modi’s letter diplomatically without being indecent. He has put nice words in the ltter while expressing his support to India’s ongoing task of carrying out relief and rescue measures in Jammu and Kashmir.Well,in the interest of bilateral ties Islamabad should have accepted part of aid from India and in return it could have also dispatched some items for the relief of people in Jammu and Kashmir. It seems that Nawaz Sharif was under the influence of hawks in his Government, the Army and the ISI besides the extremists who would have berated Pakistan Prime Minister for having accepted any aid from India. Well the major reason for Pakistan to spurn assistance from India was that the quantum of aid would have come from Modi.Since the Army, the ISI and the extremists in Pakistan continued to be great critics of Modi they would launched a campaign against Nawaz Sharif had he accepted any assistance from India which for them was aid from Modi. The way Modi called off the foreign secretary level talks between India and Pakistan seems to weight heavy on the mind of those that run the establishment in Islamabad. That Modi called off these talks when the Pak High Commissioner in India,Abdul Basit, had invited Kashmir separatists for talks despite the fact that New Delhi had cautioned him against the move. The Government led by Modi saw in it an open affront against New Delhi which was not acceptable to Modi.In addition to this New Delhi had been peeved over repeated ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir in which over 5,000 people were displaced and several civilians and security forces personnel were killed and injured. New Delhi by calling off the foreign secretary level talks wanted to convey to Islamabad that India is opposed to terror and talks to coexist. It is in the light of these developments that Nawaz Sharif adopted a tit-for- tat approach to Modi offer for aid to flood affected areas. And what seems to have peeved Islamabad is the way Modi made the offer while being in Jammu and Kashmir surveying flood damage and after that he had written formal letter to Nawaz Sharif. It is time the two sides stop fiddling with fire crackers and instead promote cordial ties which were key to peace in the entire south Asian region. |
