Fuel shortage leaves CSSD dysfunctional; GMCH fails to conduct operations
9/11/2014 12:20:59 AM

Bijay Charak
JAMMU, Sept 10: Scarcity of fuel has made Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) dysfunctional for the last four days, due to which not a single surgery has been conducted in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), forcing the patients to visit private hospitals or clinics for even minor surgeries.
Sources informed Early Times that fuel required to run the Central Sterile Supply department, in which all the equipments and devices required for surgery were sterilized by using steam, has been running short of fuel, which has virtually made the CSSD defunct. "For the last four days not a single patient is operated in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology department", sources said, adding that it has been proving a boon for private clinics and hospitals.
Sources said that liquefied oil was the fuel used by CSSD to sterilize all equipments including scissors and all other items used in operations theaters, but same was running short.
Sources alleged due to some alleged nexus between private and hospital authorities, the authorities have been delaying the purchase of fuel. "Why not administration was approached by CSSD in time for the purchase of LD oil", they said.
A doctor informed that each day nearly 10-12 surgeries were conducted in each department and as per rough estimate, nearly fifty surgeries including minor and major, have been conducted and all those patients have to visit private hospitals while the list of surgeries in GMCH, has been cancelled with each passing day.
Surjeet Singh, 24, a resident of Chenani, district Udhampur, who has to undergo a surgery in Orthopaedics department said that he was admitted in GMCH for the last 20 days. "Doctors fixed the date of surgery on September 8, 2014. We have brought all medicines and some equipments from the market but at the last movement doctors informed that the operation was postponed to Sept 10 but today again, the doctors gave same reply", he rued.
He said that in this ward, nearly 10 patients who have to undergo treatment have left the hospital for surgery in private hospitals.
"The patients of entire Jammu division have been arriving in GMCH but we are getting only bed and food to eat, but the purpose is not being solved", another patient Raghuvir Singh said, adding that they were poor and were not in a condition to go private hospital. He criticized the state government, which claimed to provide all facilities in GMCH, but where the gullible masses would go if they would not get treatment in GMC.
When contacted Medical Supertident of GMCH, Dr Rattan Pal accepted the problem and said that shortage of LD oil, steam was not generated in CSSD department and the routine surgeries have been affected.
When contacted Principal GMCH, Dr Gansham said that due to bad condition of Kashmir division, the funds were not sanctioned, due to which the problem has erupted and whenever the funds would be sanctioned, fuel would be purchased and surgeries would be started.
