CM's remarks on JK devastation underscores Govt's nonchalance | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Jammu, Sept 10: While the general public of the state has yet to come out of the distress caused by the incessant rains and flash floods, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's comments blaming marooned people themselves for the present crisis they are in, was nothing less than rubbing salt onto their wounds. The appalling comments of CM Omar Abdullah has come like a bolt from the blue for the affected people, who are already grappling with the flood fury and still awaiting relief and rescue measures particularly in upper reaches of Jammu region and several submerged areas of Kashmir Valley. In conversation with a news channel, CM Abdullah while refused to take the responsibility of the administrative failure in tackling the alarming situation having arisen out of swollen Jehlum river in Srinagar, shifted the onus on city dwellers for their present fate. "We had given advance warnings to the people of J&K, but they did not pay heed," said Chief Minister. "Every area was given a warning that too 6-8 hours in advance….While few people paid heed and fortunate enough to be safe today but others who did not took our warnings seriously are now under the rescue operations," he added. CM Abdullah also made shocking remarks on the relocation of the distraught people when asked about the criticism of the state government over the mishandling of the overall situation. "People have been rescued, they have been accommodated somewhere….. Where they have been accommodated is not my concern," he said. However, CM must not forget that even if the advanced alarms were raised to aware the masses why the government machinery failed to convince the people that the situation was turning grim after every passing minute. By censuring people for not leaving their premises well in advance, Omar has tried to convey a message that fault lies with the people only and government fulfilled its job impeccably is nothing but a cruel joke with the masses. Before pointing a finger towards people, CM should take into account the human nature as adamancy of the people comes from the fact they always display keen attachment to their belongings and property, even if facing nature's wrath. It is, indeed, ironical that when rains were wreaking havoc in Kashmir as well as Jammu region, except CM Abdullah and few others like Sham Lal Sharma and Raman Bhalla, no other cabinet Minister was visible on ground zero to administer the rescue operations on one hand and console the flood affected people on the other. |
