Centre should handle relief and rehabilitation work | Lack of faith in NC-Cong Govt | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 10: People of the flood-ravaged Jammu & Kashmir have no faith in the ruling coalition comprising the National Conference (NC) and the Congress. They believe, and very rightly, that the vested interests in the government would not make optimum use of the funds being made available to the state government by the central government for relief and rehabilitation purpose and that the "corrupt" elements in the government and the ruling coalition would "misappropriate" the Indian taxpayers' money. "They will loot and plunder the taxpayers' money" is the general perception. They consider the present dispensation corrupt to the core and insensitive and want the central government to handle the relief and rehabilitation work so that the funds are properly utilized and their hardships are minimized to the extent possible. The charge of the people against the NC-Congress coalition government cannot be dismissed as preposterous and silly. It appears well founded when viewed in the context of what the Transparency International India has said about Jammu & Kashmir. According to the Transparency International India, Jammu & Kashmir is the "second most corrupt" state in the country. However, insiders believe that Jammu & Kashmir is the "most corrupt state in the country" and there is no reason why the insiders are not believed. The lack of trust in the ruling coalition is one part of the story. The other part of the story is also not good for the NC and the Congress. The case in point is the general belief that the Omar Abdullah-led coalition government has utterly failed to handle the natural calamity that has caused extensive damage to the state both in terms of life and property as well as infrastructure, including roads, bridges, communication network and so on. The fact of the matter is that they are chaffing and seething with anger. It became evident on Tuesday, when JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz tried to interact with the evacuated people in Srinagar. The moment he opened his mouth, many people hackled him and raised anti-government slogans. The situation was such that he had to leave the spot. Had he not left the place, anything could have happened to him. The grouse of the people against ruling coalition is that it failed them when they needed its intervention all the more. They are terming the ruling coalition not only as most corrupt and insensitive but also utterly "irresponsible" and commending the efforts of the army and other central forces who are carrying on relief and rescue operations round the clock to save as many precious lives as possible. They are saying that they are today safe, secure and alive not because of the efforts of the ruling coalition but because of the sincere efforts of the army. "We are grateful to the army," they, without any exception, are saying. All right-thinking people and well-wishers of the affected people would surely endorse the suggestion that the central government should handle all the relief and rehabilitation work. |
