Modi regains political lustre from Poll results in Haryana, Maharashtra | Behind The Veil | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 19: The shine Prime Minister,Narendra Modi had lost in the previous Assembly by-poll in some states has been restored in the just ended Assembly election in Haryana nd Maharashtra. It was definitely a Modi wave in Haryana where the BJP has captured power when the same party had won four seats out of 90 in Haryana Assembly election in 2009. In Maharashtra it has emerged the largest single party despite the fact that its 25-year old ally, the Shiv Sena, had snapped ties with it and fielded its candidates even against the BJP candidates. It seems that a Modi wave on Sunday spurred BJP into top position in Maharashtra where the assembly elections threw up a hung verdict but the party was all set to capture power in Haryana on its own. It is not important for the BJP whether it forms the Government in alliance with the Shiv Sena or with the help of the outside suppport from the NCP.What is important is the ability of the BJP to emerge as the single largest party in the Assembly. Its success in having been able to form the Government on its own in Haryana has dashed hopes of two political stalwarts, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who wanted to retain power and Om Prakash Chautala, who wanted to regain power. Chautala, who has been in jail on charge of corrupt practices, had announced that he would take the oath as Chief Minister of Haryana even while being in jail. Hooda and other Congress leaders had ridiculed the pre-poll surveys telecast by several news channels saying that voters were going to vote for the Congress.Perhaps the dice against the Congress had been cast days nd weeks before polling. This is evident from the way the Congress vice-President, Rahul Gandhi, played it safe by not addressing series of pre-poll rallies in Haryana and Maharashtra. The laudable performance of the BJP in Haryana and Maharashtra could have limited impact in Jammu and kashmir whenever the election is held in the state. It is so because the BJP does not have strong pockets of influence in the Kashmir valley which has 46 out of 87 Assembly seats.Yes the Maharashtra and Haryana poll results could help the BJP in the region of Jammu which has 37seats. This way BJP cannot claim to be in the reckoning of those part ies that plan to form the Government either on their own or in alliance with other party or parties. The BJP's good performance in Maharashtra and Haryana is going to boost the morale of the BJP particularly to the Modi-Amit Shah combine. The only interesting post-poll issue in Maharashtra is whether the BJP and Shiv Sena form the Government. As far as the BJP patriarch ,L.K.Advani,is concerned he is in favour of BJP joining hands with Shiv Sena for the formation of the Government. If it materialises it will means that the BJP leadership has not sidelined Advani. If the BJP forms the Government with the outside support of NCP it would indicate that the Modi-Shah combine has sidelined Advani. |
