Srinagar, Oct 20 : What they call future safety to human lives, Soil lifting from Doodh Ganga flood channel by flood and irrigation department has triggered a major controversy between locals and officials of the concerned department. While the officials justify the on-going work in the name of preventive measures for future, the locals believe the soil lifting would pose a serious threat to life.
Residents of Barzullah and Bulbul Bagh areas living near flood channel said that ongoing soil lifting work is an attempt to put thousands of households adjacent to flood channel in trouble next time when water level rises.
"The contractor- official nexus is likely to put thousands of people in trouble again incase water level in flood channel rises. They are just creating breaches, not doing any repair or construction for safety," said Advocate Nisar Ahmad of Barzulla. Threatening agitation incase the work was not stopped immediately, the locals said that ongoing soil lifting from the banks of Doodh Ganga instead of increasing the height of the banks is likely to submerge the adjacent areas if the water level raises.
The officials of the flood and irrigation department justify the soil lifting saying that it is part of strategy to make ways for flood water and save human lives instead putting anybody in trouble. "We had given bid to three contractors who paid Rs 5 lakh each to the
department for lifting of soil from the flood channel which would help at the time of floods. We had asked them to put some soil also on banks of Doodh Ganga to increase the level of banks. We can give money back to contractors, there is rule with Government but whatever is happening is in only in the interest of people in general," said XEn Irrigation Flood Control, Ghulam Muhammad Ganai.Pertinently after people registered protest today, the Flood and irrigation department official said that the ongoing work is for betterment of people and nobody would be allowed to violate norms.
