Flood affected people hope for a package from Modi Government | As PM comes to celebrate Diwali in Srinagar | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 21: With the Election Commission of India (ECI) all set to announce dates for assembly election in Jammu & Kashmir, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre is contemplating to roll out rehabilitation of flood affected people in the coming days. Sources told Early Times that the central government has almost finalized the package for the flood affected people of state. The announcement in this regard would be made few days before the finalization of the date for the assembly election in the state. In fact the process has already been set rolling with a central team camping in the state. "Prime Minister, Narendra Modi today tweeted that he is going to celebrate the Diwali festival with the people in Kashmir. Truth of the matter is that the Prime Minister is visiting the Kashmir valley in order to have a first-hand account of relief and rehabilitation operation being taken up by the state government," said sources. Sources said that Modi would get the information about the devastation caused by the ravaging flood that hit the state in the first week of September. The PM would then get it touch with the concerned ministries at the centre so that the rehabilitation package is quite in tune with the demands of people of state. "The central government would not go by the figures projected by state government vis-à-vis rehabilitation of flood affected people. It will assess the damage of its own so that there is no loophole in the rehabilitation package to be announced for the flood affected people of the state," said sources. The central government has already deputed a team of top ranking bureaucrats to the state to have an assessment of the losses suffered during the flood. The team has visited different areas of the state and got a feel of the situation that has emerged after the destructive flood that claimed that around 300 lives across the length and breadth of state. It would be in place to mention here that both the central and state governments have come in for severe criticism from people for their alleged failure to come to rescue of flood affected people. The people more so the flood affected ones have alleged that they have been left at the mercy of God with minimal relief being provided by the state and central governments. "The visit of Prime Minister on Diwali is being viewed as an important one and eyes are focused towards the same. The visit may turn out to be a big breakthrough as far as announcement of rehabilitation package is concerned for the flood affected people. By the end of this month it is expected that the package would be announced," said sources. Sources said that Modi could have easily chosen Jammu as his destination for celebrating Diwali in the state. The aim of his Srinagar visit is to give confidence to the people that central government is there with the people of Kashmir who had to bore the brunt of the devastating flood. "It is quite obvious that the central government cannot make any announcement as and when the dates of election are announced. The Model Code of Conduct would come into force once the election dates are announced. The imposition of Model Code of Conduct would bar the central government from making the announcement about rehabilitation package," said sources.
