Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 23: The BhartiyaJanta Party (BJP) led NDA government at the centre, which had claimed to end discrimination with Jammu region, has been strangely indifferent with Jammu province of late, as it has rejected the proposal sent by Urban Environment Engineering Department (UEED) to divert nallahs falling into river Tawi. The diversion of Nallas is very crucial for ambitious Artificial Tawi Lake project, which can only be completed and dedicated to people of Jammu.
Sources informed Early Times that after six months of forming the government at New Delhi, it had not approved the proposal to the tune of Rs 34.85 Crores sent by Urban Environment Engineering Department (UEED) for diversion of nearly 17 sewerage nallahs, entering river Tawi, an official of UEED said. An official in Irrigation department pleading anonymity said that the deadline for completion of the barrage on the River Tawi was March 2014 but due to several impediments, it has been extended to March 2015.
"Still, the working agency on artificial lake project has received 70 percent of total allocated funds. Though there was delay in release of funds, but department has decided to start storing the water before March", sources said.
He further said that the project has become a burden for the officials as its construction was shifted from Sidhra to Bhagwati Nagar under political pressure to benefit some people having land near the site and it was only due to change in project site, the diversion of nallahs had become necessary.
"If the drains are not diverted before its completion it will be like a big lake of sewerage water," said a senior official. Criticizing the slow pace of artificial lake project Jammu Hotel Association office bearers said that the slow pace of artificial lake and other projects showed that the state government was least bothered about promotion of tourism in Jammu. Chief Engineer Irrigation, HC Jeerath told Early Times said that the construction of barrages would be completed in coming few months and they would start water storage till height of 4 meters. "Even if the Union government does not approve the project of diverting Nallahs, they will start water storage", he said. He further said that in absence of diversion of Nallahs, they would clean the pondage after every four or five days.
