ASHA workers stage protest
12/15/2014 10:45:22 PM
Jammu, Dec 15: Asha Workers Union Jammu affiliated with CITU held a protest demonstration from Greenbelt Park to Divisional Commissioner Office in support of their genuine demands. According to press release, the protest was led by Sunita Bhagat General Secretary and was attended by large number of ASHA workers. All ASHA workers holding red flags and placards in their hands and raising slogans were demanding recognition as employee, minimum wages, changing room, Aam Admi Bima Yojna, pre-paid mobile, Uniforms, against harassment and better service conditions.Speaking on the occasion Comrade Sham Prasad Kesar, Senior leader of CITU said that ASHAs have to work at least 7 to 8 hours a day but the government considers the ASHAs as part time voluntary health activists, but ASHA workers are not paid even minimum wages for all this work-all they receive for their labor and efforts are meagre incentives for the tasks performed. In fact, the incentives are so low that ASHAs get only between Rs. 500 to Rs 600 per month, and the majority belongs to families with an income of only Rs.1000 to Rs1500 per month. Kesar demanded that considering the crucial nature of the work they do, they should be regularized as health workers and paid the statutory minimum wages in the state. He added that continuous struggles of ASHA and effective leadership and support of the central trade unions under the leadership of CITU have resulted in the recommendations of the 45th Indian Labour Conference that ASHA must be recognized as employees, must be given minimum wages and pension. But both the Congress which led the earlier govt and the BJP which is leading the present government is keeping mum on this crucial question. While addressing the gathering Com. Om Parkash, General Secretary of CITU said that the CITU had formed the All India Coordinate Committee of ASHA workers in February 2009 to draw attention to the problems of ASHAs and to organize them.
