Women representation in JK | Only 4% females in fray for last phase of polling | | Bivek Mathur
Jammu, Dec 15 : Reflecting gender discrimination, it has come to fore that only four percent women are in fray for the last phase of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The revelation has been made by Election Watch, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), headed by RTI activist Balvinder Singh that of the total 213 candidates in fray for the fifth phase of assembly elections in the state, there is absolute dominance of male gender as 204 men against only nine females are among the contesting candidates. Bhartiya Bahujan Party and Samajvadi Party lead the table at the top spot with 50% women candidates as both these parties have fielded one women against one men with a total figure of two for the fifth phase of polling followed by Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) that has fielded 19 candidates with 17 men and 2 women taking the percentage to third highest i.e. 11% women candidate. In the table, National Conference is at number four with 10% women candidate as there are a total of 20 candidates in fray among 18 men and two women. BSP and Indian National Congress both are occupying fifth position in the table with 5% women in fray as BSP has 18 men and 1 woman with a total of 19 candidates in fray and INC has 19 men and 1 woman again with a total figure of 20 candidates in fray for the last phase of polling. There is just one woman in the category of independent candidates who are contesting the fifth phase of polling as the total figure of the independent is 70 of which 69 are men and there is just one woman. Bhartiya Janta Party and Peoples Democratic Party have not given representation to women in the fifth phase of polling as both BJP and PDP are contesting with 20 men out of total figure of 20. |
