Jammu, Dec 15: With temperature dipping several notches below normal and cold wave sweeping state, the Power Development Department (PDD) has resorted to unscheduled power cuts across Jammu city, adding to winter woes of people. Several residential and commercial areas in the city and outskirts are reportedly reeling under darkness during evening hours due to long power curtailments. Expressing concern over prolonged curtailments, Arun Singh Chib of Panjtirthi said, "Though the PDD has been charging monthly electricity tariffs from households and business establishments, the curtailments have been increasing with each passing day", he said.
He further said that with the plunging of temperatures, requirement of power increased but power curtialments made life of old age and children hell. "Though the winter has not even set in fully and the power cuts have become too frequent. Electricity cuts ranging from 10 to 15 hours have added to the woes of people in the Jammu region", he said. Mohmmad Iqbal another resident of city said the authorities are not paying heed to their hardships, since Friday, curtailments ranging from 12-14 hours have been witnessed but authorities were totally mum over the issue. They also accused the Omar Abdullah government of discriminating against the region. "We have done everything possible - from meeting bureaucrats to ministers, and writing to the chief minister.
But no one is paying any heed to this grim situation. Now if they want us to go on strike then we will do that also," Iqbal said. "Official machinery seems to have completely collapsed because some areas are facing power curtailments for 10 to 14 hours and some localities are not getting water supply for days," he added.
He said the government's "mismanagement, coupled with the regional bias, was adding to the woes of Jammuites and must be looked into".
When contacted Superintendent Engineer Sunil Gupta accepted and said that due to suddenly change in weather conditions, the generation capacity of all the hydro electric projects have been declined.
"The demand in Jammu and Kashmir has increased with sudden dip in state but we have been getting less power from Northern grid, so we are compelled to curtail power for extra hours", he said, adding that the curtailments would only be decreased, after proper supply from northern grid.
