Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 15: Giving jitters to opponents particularly the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) camp in Kathua constituency, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today held a mammoth election rally at Ram Leela Ground, Kathua thereby giving a new dimension to the political scenario in the poll bound segment.
In a massive show of strength the BSP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha Member Narendra Kashyap addressed a largely attended gathering in favour of party candidate from Kathua assembly segment, Som Raj Majotra has somewhat managed to counter the Modi effect which has swayed the people of Kathua on December 13. If political analysts are to be believed then the BSP's rally drew a crowd of more than ten thousand people which has left the candidates of other political parties high and dry especially the BJP, whose candidate Rajiv Jasrotia is already battling with an 'outsider' tag as he belongs to Hiranagar adding that it is no secret that his candidature was bitterly opposed by the local BJP leadership.
"By any standards, the BSP rally was not only big in numbers but it can also be categorized as purely an attendance of Kathua constituency voters whereas Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally two days back, though, was much bigger in size but the people who were gathered at Sports Stadium, Kathua had come from all the five constituencies of Kathua district and even from neighbouring state of Punjab," said political analysts."The BSP's rally is really a cause of concern for other parties in the reckoning including the BJP, the Congress or for that matter sitting MLA Charanjit Singh, who is again contesting as an independent….BJP which was brimming with confidence with Modi's rally is now certainly on back foot since its candidate Rajiv Jasrotia, who is already finding it difficult to do away with the outsider label," they added.
Though the Kathua constituency is heading for a quadrangular contest between the sitting MLA and independent candidate Charanjeet Singh, BJP candidate Rajiv Jasrotia, BSP candidate Somraj Majotra and Congress candidate Jatinder Singh alias Babu Singh but the competition has become even more stiff with back to back rallies of the BJP and the BSP.
The track record of the BSP in the Kathua Assembly segment has so far remained impressive in the last three Assembly polls as it won the seat in 1996 when its candidate Sagar Chand defeated an independent candidate Lal Chand Sharma by a margin of 1129 votes. While in the subsequent Assembly elections, the BSP stood runners-up as its candidates Sagar Chand in 2002 and Som Raj in 2008 narrowly missed the chance to win the Kathua seat.
On both the occasions, the BSP candidates lost to independent candidates with a wafer thin margin of 3059 and 2362 votes respectively."BSP remains in the forefront in the electoral battle of Kathua Asssembly segment since 1996 and this time around it is emerging as a strong contender again…If today's BSP rally is any yardstick to measure the difference between victory and defeat then the Mayawati's party has edge over others…
.The Kathua constituency has more than 30 thousand Scheduled Caste (SC) electors, who are trusted supports of the BSP…. Presence of large number of SC voters could bolster BSP's prospects in Kathua segment," said political experts."Moreover, the majority of Rajputs, who comprise 40 thousand plus votes, after witnessing BSP's huge rally could now consolidate in favour of independent candidate and sitting MLA Charanjit Singh, who command a huge following within his own community," they added.
