Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, Dec 26: Contrary to tall claims of the government, scores of villages are devoid of electricity, water supply and healthcare facilities. Local residents have been suffering due to lack of basic amenities in Baramulla district of North Kashmir.
Local residents of Nowgam Kandi, Doudbugh, Dandmooh, Satsaran, Pachar, Takiayi Yousf Shah and other adjacent areas are facing unscheduled electricity in the villages since last two weeks.
Ghulam Nabi of Doudbugh told Early Times that, "since past two weeks we are facing unscheduled electricity, we are paying our regular monthly bills and for what, if the same happens, we will not pay any bill in future.
During harsh winter Power Development Department (PDD) should formulate a clear cut programme with reference to the electricity, sometimes we see electricity at 11 pm and sometimes we don't see it for days, Local added.
However these far flung areas are not only facing unscheduled electricity but to add their woes, the village also lacks a healthcare facility, they are forced to consume contaminated water from a nearby nullahs.
The residents of Satsaran and Pachar area called up Early Times and said that "The threat of outbreak of water-borne diseases looms large due to the consumption of contaminated water, particularly during the harsh winter.
Few days back, I had to hospitalize my children in the district hospital due to severe intestinal infection. The authorities have ignored this village on all fronts," said Mohammad Ashraf and Nazir Ahmad resident of these villages.
Many people have suffered from diseases like gastroenteritis, jaundice and hepatitis due to consumption of the contaminated water in the past.
Residents of these isolated and ignored villages are still using primitive methods like burning of wood to illuminate their houses and that too in the 21st century, which is completely showing the callous attitude of the government towards these far flung areas, said another local resident of an area. "Due to the use of age-old methods, many people, especially expectant mothers, are facing severe health problems. The prevalence of respiratory diseases is on the rise," locals complained.
When contacted, senior officials of district administration assured that normal power and potable water supply would be restored within a week.
During winter season some hilly areas remain cut off , so need of the hour is to provide them basic facilities so that they would not feel that they are ignored by the government at all fronts, locals added.
