Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 18: A day after militants shot dead a Personal Security Officer (PSO) of National Conference MLA-elect from Homeshalibugh, Abdul Majid Larmi, in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, top police officials today asked their subordinates to ensure that they carry their weapons along.
Talking to Early Times Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra said, "We have asked our men to be extra cautious as JK Police have been instrumental in breaking the back of militancy in the state. We have been getting major successes and militants are on run. In desperation they are looking for soft targets and my boys who usually go home on leave don't carry any weapons along with them."
Pertinently, militants killed the police constable Zahoor Ahmad Dar, of Redwani Kulgam of 11 Battalion of Security Wing of JK Police, at least five kilometers away from the residence of MLA-elect on Saturday. Zahoor was the local of the area and used to come home every evening and join the MLA in the morning.
The DGP said that top officials keep on briefing their subordinates regularly and do take feedback from them on daily basis. "Our constables are a part of the society and are found everywhere that is why they tend to become soft targets. We have instructed our boys to remain extra cautious."
Asked would the security of the elected MLAs be reviewed after Saturday's attack, the DGP said, "We have already advised the politicians not to move without security and we keep on reviewing their security on regular basis."
The DGP said that the security has been beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir in wake of the intelligence inputs that militants may strike ahead of Republic Day. "All the possible measures have been taken and people need not worry," Rajendra assured.
The DGP said that militants who fired upon Dar have been identified and Police would catch them soon.
Meanwhile, sources told Early Times that top police officials have asked the security guards of all the politicians to take extra precautions and remain vigilant in wake of the increased threat perception and forthcoming Republic Day. "No formal orders have been issued to policemen to remain armed but informally they have been told to ensure that they carry their arms along with them so that they can retaliate if militants strike," said a source.
" Had the deceased policeman been carrying his weapon he could have easily retaliated but being a local he unfortunately didn't pay much heed towards the prevailing threat perception in the area. We have told all our boys irrespective of where they are posted to ensure that they don't become soft targets and not to take any situation for granted," a police official said.
