Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 18: 30th North Zone Youth Festival badly exposed lack of professionalism, commitment and creativity of the faculty members and other officials of University of Jammu who had been assigned task of preparing the students for this mega event.
It seems that the only silver lining for the officials of Jammu University was keen interest shown by senior IAS officer Rakesh Gupta who is Principal Secretary to Governor. Himself an artist, Gupta took keen interest in the one act play item. The university officials could be easily seen falling over each other to grab the attention of Governor's man in the university. Such was the eagerness to get photographed with Gupta that one of the officials wanted Padamshree Awardee Prof. Ved Ghai to be shifted from the seat she was occupying.
This enthusiasm was nowhere to be seen when the University teams were performing on-stage. And if the participants are to be believed, they had prepared on their own with little or no help from the officials who have been made incharge of providing opportunities to youngsters seeking admission to various diploma, graduate and post-graduate programmes in the university and in the affiliated colleges, particularly those who have talent in cultural and literary activities.
9 member campus cultural committee alongwith the team of Dean Student Welfare (DSW) Prof. Pankaj Srivastva failed the efforts made by acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.D.Sharma to get the event hosted in Jammu University. He is close relative of a top IAS officer and hence, the acting VC despite wanting to shift him has failed. Barring elocution and debate, the performance of almost all the teams of Jammu University was lacklustre; giving clear proof of the unprofessionalism, insignificance and ineffectiveness of campus culture committee.
They seemed to have gone out of ideas and thus, are now expecting the judges to do them some favour so that grace is saved. Since the results for all the events are to be declared tomorrow, there is possibility that University of Jammu may spring some surprise but in all likelihood, the university will fare badly if fair results are announced. Even the judges agreed that there was nothing exceptional in the performance of the teams and troupes from University of Jammu.
Overall, the teams from Jammu University failed to create a niche for themselves in the highly professional talent pool from north India which had assembled for the festival. Not only they failed to impress the teams from outside the state and judges, university disappointed the local audience which had specially taken out time from their routine schedule to applaud their teams participating in 25 different events. Questions are being raised on the ability of officials who have been appointed specifically for taking care of student having talent in cultural and literary activities.
Headed by Prof. Parmeshwari Sharma of the Hindi department, the campus cultural committee has Prof. Sameer Gupta of the Business School as co-chairman. It includes an artist from famous Natrang Theatre yet what was exhibited on the stage in one act play embarrassed one and all. In the backdrop of mesmerizing performances by participating institutes of northern India, an ordinary play was performed on the stage by the students of University of Jammu. What should have showcased the culture of Jammu region reflected the poor quality of talent in JU.
Sumeet Sharma, who is the instructor in Drama and Performing Arts, was seen most of the time performing the job of a hospitality and protocol officer. An artist from Natrang theatre, Sumeet has seemingly special efforts in Jammu University to find out real talent and produce something of the stature of plays presented by other universities of northern India. Dean Students Welfare (DSW) alongwith all other officials of the campus cultural committee were seemingly more concerned about hosting likely VCs of JU and officers from the state administration.
This huge scarcity of talent despite having 80 colleges associated with it does speak in volumes about how the Display Your Talent is held and adjudicated. The festival also raises serious questions on the functioning of the Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA). Despite being part of Jammu University, the institutes failed to showcase cultural diversity of Jammu region. A Dogri song which has become trademark of Jammu University was presented but those dancing on the stage lacked coherence and continuity
Not even one master performance does raise eye-brows as well as questions. Though the university might manage some positions but those who watched the university perform found all the performances ordinary and below par apart from some consolation in two or three of the 25 times.
Not only this, the officials of Jammu University who do not waste a minute in writing rebuttals and rebukes need to do some explaining to the acting vice-chancellor as the teams chosen to win the competition failed to impress one and all.
