Revenue official held on charges of torturing woman

Anantnag, March 17: Continuing its drive against criminal especially those involved in crime against women, the Anantnag police arrested a revenue official -Patwari in Rekhibra area of Kuthar Kokernag on Thursday for allegedly torturing a married woman (his sister in law) by inflicting burn injuries to her. Police sources said, "The accused has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad who happens to be cousin of victim's husband Gulzar Ahmad."He was booked under section 498-A (enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married women) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) for torturing Safmia (name changed) at her residence Rekhbra Kuthar, police sources said, adding, "the accused was arrested after the brother of the victim filed a written complaint against the official with Police Post Vatrasoo. "Accordingly an FIR 21/2015 u/s 498-A was registered against the official and further investigations are on in this regard, sources said. Meanwhile the victim told Early Times that the accused is cousin of her husband Gulzar Ahmad who had threatened me that he will go for second marriage. Recalling her horrid memories, she said, "We don't have baby after three years of my nuptial ties with Gulzar Ahmad. "And Gulzar Ahmad have turned towards violence for the past some months he besides thrashing and beating me, threatened to go for a second marriage, she lamented and added, "when I objected Patwari Manzoor Ahmad locked me in room and tortured me for hours together and even had tried to molest me." She said that the government official and her husband are relatives and have joint business and thus he (the accused) came as a help to Gulzar. Meantime Brother of the victim, Mohd Jameel Khan accusing police of delayed action in this regard said, "Three days ago I lodged complaint with concerned Police Station and till today they didn't arrest the main accused -Patwari."
He added it was because of protest of family alongwith some locals outside office of Deputy Commissioner (DC) they (Police) arrested him
