Tension grips Sunderbani over issue of prayers on main road
Minority community members block road

Early Times Report

Rajouri, July 3:Following the offering of Friday prayers by majority community members, who alleged that the members of minority community were not allowing them to construct a mosque there, on the Jammu-Poonch road at Sunderbani, people held a demonstration against the local administration and blocked road for about 5 hours.
A "ziarat' is situated near the main chowk at Sunderbani and members of both the communities have been paying their obeisance there since long. A few years ago, some members of the minority community were killed by the militants in the area and they were also cremated in the vicinity of this ziarat. Now, members of the majority community want to construct a mosque there. Since it is situated in the minority community dominated area, they are opposed to its construction. Minority community members say the Ziarat is visited equally by the members of both the communities and a 15-member committee ( 7 members from each community) headed by Ashwani Sharma has already been constituted for the development of this 'ziarat.
The majority community is, however, adamant to construct a mosque there but people said they would not allow construction of the mosque. Today, when some people were offering Friday Prayers on the highway, hundreds of vehicles got stranded including an ambulance carrying a serious patient.
This was objected by the family members who requested the Namazees to allow them move ahead but they were allegedly not allowed.
Immediately after the Friday prayers members of minority community held a protest against the local administration and blocked Jammu-Poonch highway for about 4 hours, demanding action against a Moulvi. MLA Ravinder Raina reached the spot and pacified the protesters assuring legal action in the matter.
Meanwhile, one Vivek Sharma and some other persons, who were witnesses to the use of filthy language against the patient and family members, have filed a complaint with Sunderbani police station against the Moulvi and others.
"Some vested interests from Rajouri and Poonch have been creating wedge between members of both the communities and also disturbing peace and communal harmony in Sunderbani area. Administration must take a serious note of the situation and should take stern action against such forces" said MLA.
Inspector Parmodh, SHO of Sunderbani police station, said police were in the process of lodging an FIR on the complaint of some residents of the area.
