Bishnah's ailing SDH lacks BSU

Jammu, July 3: Despite tall claims of Health Minister that his government assigned top priority to healthcare, the failure of the department to provide basic facilities and infrastructure in health institution across Jammu province has been causing huge load on district hospitals and Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu.
The state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that three years of sanctioning Blood Storage Unit to Sub District hospital Bishnah nothing has moved.
Reliable sources informed Early Times that the machinery of Blood Storage Unit (BSU) which was procured by Director Health Services Jammu in the year 2013 for SDH Bishnah but surprising till date the machinery including blood bag refrigerator, deep freezers, insulated carrier boxes and Microscope and centrifuge yet not installed, gathering dust in the corner of hospital.
Sources further said that in absence of BSU facilities at SDH Bishnah, people of Bishnah and their adjoining areas have shifted patient to district hospitals Gandhi Nagar, Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu.
"In order to provide comprehensive emergency obstetric care services in the SDHs, previous government had approved 26 BSUs for 26 health institution across state in which 13 for Jammu and 13 for Kashmir province, but surprising some of them are defunct and few were not installed", sources said, adding that people hopes from new government that done better against previous government but has done nothing more than 100 days period lapse the concerned minister are busy for maintain discipline in health institutions, instead of maintaining infrastructure.
Ankush Bhagat a resident of Bishnah said that there were numerous cases of delivery, accidental cases but due to in absence of BSUs, all such cases doctors have been referred to district hospital Gandhi Nagar or GMC.
"If adequate facilities would be provided in remote or tertiary health institutions, the workload in district hospital and GMC&H would reduce and patients would also get treatment at their doorsteps", he added.
When contacted Block Medical Officer Bishnah, Dr. LD Bhagat said that the old block of hospital have not enough space due to which the Blood Storage Unit was not installed here and the institution has lack round the clock electricity supply which is essential for such unit.
"Next year the new building of hospital will be completed and the machinery was installed in it", he said.
