Complete Bandh in Jammu for Fourth Day, Violence Reported
8/3/2015 11:35:47 PM
Early Times Report

jAMMU, Aug 3: The Jammu bandh, in its fourth day, today witnessed clashes between the police and protestors at several places, where the police had to resort to cane charging on the protestors who indulged in stone pelting.
"There were few incidents of stone pelting on the police and we also had to use mild force to quell the protestors," a police officer said.
The AIIMS Coordination Committee, an amalgam of over 70 social, religious, political and business organisations, last evening extended the Jammu bandh by another 72 hours.
The ACC had earlier called for 72 hours complete Jammu bandh from July 31 to Aug 2; it further extended the strike call by another 72 hours when the earlier deadline finished last evening.
The ACC has been spearheading the agitation for the establishment of a full-fledged All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Jammu. They have been accusing the BJP-PDP coalition of shifting the proposed AIIMS sanctioned for Jammu to Kashmir.
"Several of our activists including lawyers and transporters have been taken into custody by the police," Zorawar Singh, a spokesman of ACC said.
He said that the rallies conducted by ACC have been peaceful but still the police resorted to use of force to quell the protestors at several places.
"Our protest has so far been by and large peaceful, but we got reports that police used force on our protestors at several places," he said.
Meanwhile, the business establishments, market places and shops remained closed generally and public transport was off the roads in view of the renewed 72-hour bandh call given by the ACC.
The bandh began on Friday morning and was renewed on Sunday for another 72 hours.
At several places, the protesters blocked the highway and various roads in the city by burning tyres, police said.
Protest rallies were held at several places across the city.
"There are reports that police resorted to mild cane charge near the Gujjar nagar area and the Nowabad police station on the ACC activists," a member of ACC said. Accusing the BJP of trying to scuttle the agitation, the ACC members charged that the government has been using police to quell the protestors. "We have reports that the BJP has been using police to scuttle the peaceful bandh, they are selectively targeting our activists," Singh said.
He said that the BJP has betrayed the people of Jammu and backtracked on all the promises and assurances it had given to the people of Jammu during the Assembly elections.
"They (BJP betrayed the people of Jammu much before the government was formed, they sold out Jammu's pride at the time when they were in the process of finalising the agenda of alliance with PDP," Singh said. Refuting police's claim that stone pelting took place, Singh said that the police resorted to unprovoked cane charging on peaceful protestors in which several of the ACC activists are reported to have been injured. In support of the bandh call given by AIIMS coordination committee, Hiranagar town too remained observed completeshutdown. The educational institutions remained closed, the business establishments remained closed and the public transport vehicles remained off the road. Hundreds of Congress activists under the leadership of District Congress Committee president & Former MLC Subash Gupta carried out protest rally throughout town. Later, the protesters raising slogans against coalition government set ablaze the effigy. Subash Gupta in his address said that Congress thinks that it is our moral duty to support every rightful cause of Jammu region and AIIMS is the right of Jammu, which they will get it at any cost. To intensify the agitation, call of 72 hours complete Jammu Bandh is a rightful decision taken by coordination committee. He appealed all Shopkeepers, Business owners, Students of Schools & Colleges including their parents, Transport Unions, NGOs, Unions, Industries & more particularly to all the residents of Jammu Province especially District Kathua to observe complete shutdown & shut down for next hours.
