Early Times Report
Kupwara Aug 31: Residents of Halmatpora locality in Kupwara district while complaining water borne disease in their area due to the use of contaminated water have demanded restoration of Nadipal Water Supply scheme to Halmatpora to end the crisis. Comprising of 2000 households the area is without water supply since three years, the villagers complained and said that they are forced to fetch the drinking water conventional water resources like local rivulets (Nullah) which is affecting their health. "We are forced to fetch the unsafe water from local streams which is not fit for human consumption, lamented Tariq Ahmad who also added that they have no other source of water except Nadipal scheme which is defunct since decades.
The villagers recalled that the water supply scheme was implemented in 90's but some miscreants of the village stole the water supply pipes worth crores making the scheme defunct.
"Nadipal water spring produces a huge quantity of water which could have been supplied to the half of Kupwara district," they claimed and alleged that PHE department has been a mute spectator since a long and paved way to villagers to steal the pipes.
Pertinent to mention that Nadipal in Halmatpora was supplying the water to many villages including Wayan , Kupwara, Sulkoot, Bohipora, Batpora and many other villages besides the Halmtpora. They said that however the government has spend crores of rupees on the water supply scheme which is existing nowhere in the area courtesy lack of accountability on the part of official at the helms of affairs but they are facing the brunt of no fault. Irked over lackadaisical approach of concerned PHE Department to prove safe drinking water to people of the area the villagers warned that they will be forced to move to the court against the PHE department if the matter is not resolved at earliest.
