Jammu, Aug 31: Want to know how non-serious J&K government is towards improving education sector in the state? Sample this: Just two months are left for the current academic session to end but the Education Department is yet to appoint lecturers in Government Degree College Thana mandi. There are 21 sanctioned posts of associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers but at the moment only five people-four lecturers and the principal-run the college. In July 31 this year, contract of many contractual lecturers expired and since then the vacancies are yet to be fulfilled, sources told Early Times. Ashiq Hussain, a student of the GDC Thana mandi, said the college has modern infrastructure and an impressive roll of students. What is lacking is requisite stuff, he said. The college offers Science and Arts streams. There are however teachers for Urdu, Computer Science, Geology and EVS only. "In absence of Science lecturers, the students approached district administration many a time but to no avail. They only assured us that some lecturers would be made available soon. Till date no such appointment was made by then government," said Hussain. He said that in this academic session students have had suffered a lot and the last semester is ending in November while examinations would be held in December. Now when just two months are left for the session to end, syllabus of most of the subjects is yet to be touched, said the students. Principal, BB Sharma, admitted that the college was running short of lecturers. He however expressed helplessness over the issue. "It's not in my hand to appoint lecturers. The matter was discussed with the higher authorities, but no response has been received from them," Sharma said told Early Times. Director Colleges, Prof. T A Kawoos, did not return repeated call from this newspaper for his comment. |
