Early Times Report
Anantnag, Feb 6: A local militant of Hizbul Mujahideen was killed Saturday in an encounter with government forces in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.
The gunfight raged in Veerbagh-Gundipora village of the district after the government forces cordoned off the village and launched a search operation.
A police official said that a militant was killed in the initial exchange of fire. He identified the slain militant as Raqib Bashir, a resident of Zoodur in the district, saying that he was affiliated with the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.
Cordon of the area was continuing till late in the evening as the government forces said they suspect presence of two more militants in the village. However, a senior police officer later said that the gunfight has ended, but search operation was going on.
Meanwhile, the district administration of Pulwama has decided to impose restrictions under Section 144 in areas falling within a 2.5 kilometre radius of sites of any gun fights in the district to prevent civilian deaths.
"It has been made to appear to me that during encounters the people of surrounding areas do receive bullet injuries as a result of their free movement in and around the encounter places," a media report quoted an order issued by the DC Pulwama on February 5. "In order to save the precious lives of the civilians, it is expedient to impose restrictions on their movement in and around the encounter places."
"In exercise of powers vested in me under Section 144 Cr Pc impose restrictions so that people within a radius of 2.5 km from the encounter site shall not venture to come out from their homes except in case of unavoidable exigencies may seek assistance from the local police," the report reads.
The ambulances, medics and paramedics have been exempted from the restrictions.
"This order shall cease to be in force on the expiry of two months from the issuance or till further orders whichever is earlier," it added.
