SRINAGAR, Apr 17: Kashmir based traders today rejected the probe announced by the state government in connection with the recent killings in North Kashmir's Kupwara district and demanded that investigations should be carried out by an independent international agency.
"Over the years many people lost their lives in the firing of security forces. Successive governments ordered for probes in such incidents, but at the end of day nothing came out. As such we out-rightly reject the probe announced by the state government in the killings that took place recently in Handwara and Kupwara. The probe should be carried out by some independent international organization so that truth comes out and action is taken against the culprits," said Mohammad Yasin Khan, Chairman Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) while addressing a press conference here.
The KTMF Chairman expressed shock over the recent killings and alleged that the same is being done under a 'conspiracy' so that future generation of Kashmiris is wiped out. He said if the state government is really serious in providing justice in the recent case then it should immediately order for the suspension of security forces personnel who fired upon protesters.
"Let the state government register a First Information Report in the case and order for the suspension of the army personnel who resorted to firing on the peaceful protesters. The mainstream politicians are playing to the galleries and doing nothing so that there is some solace for the people who lost their dear ones in the recent firing incidents," said Yasin who is also chairman of his faction of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA).
Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, President Traders Association-Handwara said that there was no reason for the security forces personnel to carry out firing on protesters mostly comprising of college students. He said the situation could have been handled in a better manner had the police and security forces acted in a responsible manner.
"Whenever a protest breaks out the police resorts to lathi-charge and this is followed by teargas shelling. Nothing like this happened while dealing with the protesters at the main Handwara Chowk. The security forces personnel without caring for the consequences whatsoever fired directly upon the protesters leading to death of the innocents," said Aijaz.
The President of Traders Association-Handwara said that bunkers erected at the Handwara chowk, near the Jamia Masjid Handwara and near the girls' school should be removed immediately so that untoward incidents are avoided in the future. He alleged that chief minister Mehbooba Mufti did not stop at Handwara during her visit on Saturday and said that the CM just visited the Kupwara town.
Mohammad Ashraf Mir, President Federation Chamber of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) said that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should immediately come out of the government with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). He alleged that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) wants to carry out genocide of the Kashmiris.
"When Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was the chief minister we told him to snap ties with BJP since the RSS is getting its agenda implemented through PDP. We are reiterating our point and as we urge Mehbooba Mufti to divorce BJP and break this alliance. If the PDP doesn't do the same then they would be wiped out from the valley," said President FCIK.
The traders said that a seven member team of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I), KEA, KTMF and FCIK were not allowed to reach Kupwara and talk to the bereaved families. They said that they talked to the people at Handwara and Bumhama and enquired from the people about the sequence of events that led to death of five civilians in the district. The traders demanded immediate revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state.
