Budgam, Apr 17: Government Degree College Charar-i-Sharief in central Kashmir's Budgam district continues to operate from tin sheds inspite of the fact that new building constructed at a cost of around 8 crores stands inaugurated almost two years back.
Details available with Early Times reveal that more than 500 students are suffering due to official apathy as the space available in make shift tin sheds creates lots of problems for the students. Government Degree College Charar-i- sharief was constructed in the outskirts of Charar town on the Srinagar Charari Sharief road on a sprawling land of 30 kanals , but authorities due to unknown reasons are yet to start classes from this newly constructed building.
" The makeshift college is housed in few tin sheds located near Govt Higher Secondary school Charar-i-Sharief , and due to lack of space and infrastructure we suffer a lot as students are being packed like animals in the class rooms , we fail to understand why the newly constructed college building is not put to use ? What was the fun to inaugurate this building almost two years back" , said Fayaz Ahmad a student of Govt Degree College Charar-i-Sharief.
According to sources, the authorities are yet to make a payment of Rs 50 lakhs to the contractor and he even offered the college principal to take over the building , but the principal due to unknown reasons is not ready to start class work from the newly constructed building.
Local residents of Charar-i-Sharief especially the students have appealed Education Minister Naeem Akhtar to intervene. "We appeal Education Minister to intervene into this issue. Government promises right to education for students , but we are being made to sit in makeshift tin sheds which are full of mud and filth. There are no proper washrooms also in the makeshift college which causes problems for the female students especially" said Shaheena Akhtar (name changed) a student of B A 2nd year.
Pertinent to mention that work in several other Degree colleges in Budgam , Beerwah has also got affected due to lack of non-teaching staff.
Sources said these colleges, were also operating from tin sheds, but were shifted to buildings, constructed in their respective areas in 2010. ET meanwhile learnt that some technical defects have been pointed out in these college buildings, which were constructed by National Building Construction Corporation Limited.
The official sources disclosed that the size of classrooms were not in accordance with University Grants Commission norms. "As per UGC norms, a classroom should accommodate around 80 students. However, it becomes quite difficult for 56 students to get adjusted in classrooms of these colleges," sources said.
