Handwara killings

SRINAGAR, Apr 17: Acting on the directions of the High Court the Jammu & Kashmir Police produced the school girl before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Handwara and the girl recorded her statement before the judge in connection with the recent alleged molestation case at Handwara in North Kashmir's Kupwara district.
While recording her statement the girl stood by her earlier averment that no case of molestation came up while she was coming out of the washroom of her school on Tuesday April 12, 2016. She in the statement before the CJM Handwara said that she was dragged and assaulted by two boys. A police spokesman said that on 16-04-2016 the victim girl (name withheld) was produced along with her father before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Handwara and her statement was recorded in case FIR Number 130/2016 under section 354, 341, 509 RPC of Police Station Handwara.
"In her statement before the Judicial Magistrate she revealed that on 12-04-2016 after school hours while proceeding to her home with her friend she entered in a public lavatory near main chowk Handwara for answering the call of nature," said the police spokesman.
The police spokesman while quoting the girl said that as soon as she came out of lavatory she was confronted assaulted and dragged by two boys and her bag was snatched adding that one of the boys was in school uniform.
"The production of girl along with her father before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Handwara was done in order to comply with the order of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir," said the police spokesman.
It would be in place to mention here that this incident led to trouble in the Handwara town of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Groups of agitating people mostly comprising of youth carried out strong protest demonstration against security forces personnel and alleged that the school going girl was molested by one of the security forces personnel.
As the situation went out of the control the security forces resorted to firing on the protesters leading to death of two persons namely NayeemQadir Bhat and Mohammad Iqbal at main chowk Handwara. Another lady identified as Raja Begum also got killed in separate firing incident in the Langate area of the same district. Later on two more youth identified as Jahangir Ahmad Wani and Arif Hussain Dar got killed in separate incidents at Drugmulla and Nutnussa in the Kupwara district.
The killings led to disruption across Kashmir valley with restrictions being imposed in some areas of Srinagar district and Handwara, Langate and Kupwara towns of Kupwara district. Normal life got paralyzed due to the continuous strike call given by the separatists against the incident. The restrictions were lifted only in Srinagar today and they continue in the Kupwara district.
