'Jammu has not given power of attorney to Delhi to decide its fate'

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 17: An impression has gone deeply down that an evil influence is at work to defeat the great objective of those who have been fighting for the unity and integrity of Jammu and for its merger with New Delhi and link the fate of this strategic region with Kashmir and throw in the lot of its people with the fundamentalist Kashmiri leadership, which represents Pakistan in the Valley. This has become the talk of the town. Everyone these days is discussing his future, as also the implications of the BJP-led NDA Government's policy towards the Valley, as a sense of insecurity has gripped them.
What has added to their worries are the circumstances under which nearly 2000 hapless non-local students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar had to quit Kashmir on April 11 to save their lives. The concerned people of Jammu, who have been discussing this episode and the fast deteriorating situation in the Valley, have virtually come to the conclusion that if they remained inactive or devoid of any political activity any longer, their fate would be no different from that of the minority Kashmiri Hindus, who had to become refugees in their own moth land following the utter failure of the powers-that-be in New Delhi to protect this minority against exclusion by the majority. To be more exact, they have reached a conclusion that they will be left with no other option but to quit Jammu sooner than later in case they didn't rise to the occasion and defeat the regressive forces in the Valley.
One thing is quite common in the discourses in Jammu: The people of Jammu are neither afraid of Pakistan nor afraid of Kashmiri separatists. They say Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists are the known enemies of India and country's majority community and they also say, and rightly, that the objective of Pakistan is not only to annex J&K to its territories and establish control over the precious Indus waters so that the authorities in Pakistan, especially the Army and the ISS, could keep Pakistan intact, but also to hoist Pakistani flag on Red Fort.
Their grouse is fundamentally against the authorities in New Delhi and the Indian political class. "If the Narendra Modi Government, in collaboration with the Indian political class, could change the political map of India by handing over thousands of acres of land of Assam to Bangladesh without taking the nation into confidence, why can't it compromise the age-old stand of India on J&K and handover the state to Pakistan or Kashmiri separatists," they say, adding that "had the BJP again won the 2004 general election, Atal Behari Vajpayee would have implemented the Musharraf formula that provided for demilitarization of J&K, division of J&K into five regions, India-Pakistan joint control over J&K and porous borders". They are absolutely right. Indeed, the Vajpayee government had thought of compromising the Indian stand on J&K.
They not only lambaste the BJP and Vajpayee for their pro-Pakistan and pro-separatist policies, but also level similar charges against the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government (2004-2014). Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself had said during the election campaign in 2004 that agreement with Pakistan over J&K was just "a signature away". Ironically, the policy of the present government at the centre is no different.
The fact of the matter is that the concerned citizens of Jammu have lost faith in New Delhi and they are of the view that the present government at the centre could do what Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh couldn't do because of certain factors, internal and external. It is this apprehension that has frightened the people of Jammu province and the result is an intense debate in social and political circles over their fate as well as fate of their region. The silver lining is that they have resolved that they will fight and not quit Jammu. "We have not given power of attorney to New Delhi or any political party to decide our fate; we will decide our fate," they have been saying. That means confrontation between Jammu and New Delhi is in the offing.
One can only hope and pray that New Delhi would appreciate the sentiments of Jammu and desist from doing anything that further accords a dangerous legitimacy to the politics of separatism and communalism being indulged in by Kashmiri leaders in the Valley. To sideline Jammu or to strike another truce with Kashmiri leaders over the head of Jammu would only provoke political explosions in this region and the nation cannot afford disturbances in Jammu province for obvious reasons.
