K Koushal Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 26: Contrary to the claims of keeping crime against women under check in J&K, the Crime Report recently released by Police department has revealed that J&K registered more cases of crime against women than the national average. The official statistics reveal that Jammu and Kashmir registered 57 cases per one lakh women population, which is much higher than the all India rate- 56.3. The figures are also indicative of the inability of the J&K Police to keep crime against women under check. As per the figures, there is an increase in the cases registered by police across the state in the year 2015 in comparison to the year 2014. The prime assignment entrusted to JKP is to maintain law and order besides safeguarding the women and children, but the trustworthiness of the JKP furthermore came under censure after release of figures. However, against the all India rate of 56.3 cases per one lakh population of Women, J&K witnessed 57 cases, which is much higher than the all India rate, says the report of NCRB of 2014. The figure indicating upsurge in crime against women in the state clearly highlights the failure of J&K police in ensuring women safety. As per comparison of cases of crime against women in last two years, 3535 cases were registered against women in the year 2014 while 3539 cases were registered in the year 2015 while abduction of women/girls has surged as 1097 cases were registered in the year 2015 while in the year 2014, 826 cases were registered by the police across the state. Not only this, the disposal of such cases in the courts at the national level is around 85.2 percent while in J&K, it is dismal. As per NCRB statistics, the conviction rate is just 39.1 percent in J&K against the all India average of 56.3 which infact is 'worrisome' for people and the police as well. |
