Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 26: Everyone talks about Kashmir, Kashmiri pain, Kashmiri alienation, Kashmiri needs an aspirations and a solution to the so-called Kashmir problem - a solution that is acceptable to the Kashmir's majority community, and to the members of a particular religious sect, who have been at the helm of affairs for almost seven decades now and are well entrenched not only in the political establishment in J&K but also at the centre. This has been the approach of the Indian political since 1947 itself.
People had hoped that the rise of BJP to power at the centre and the "historic victory" of the BJP in Jammu in 2014 would end the earlier Kashmir-centric and anti-Jammu policies and hand down a government to the people of the state which would be impartial, state-centric and based on the principle of justice and equity. But the ungrateful BJP and equally ungrateful PM Modi's government dashed that hope to the ground and the result is widespread discontent, disaffection and disappointment among all in Jammu province, barring those close to corridors of power and political parties-in-power or even close to the opposition parties like the NC.
That the BJP has turned extremely anti-Jammu could be seen from its share in the governance of the state and also from what the executive head of the country, Narendra Modi, said at Katra only last week. Among other things, he referred to 'Kashmiriyat" and once again reassured the Kashmiri Muslims that New Delhi and the whole of the county was with them and they will do everything to redress their grievances, genuine or otherwise, and win over them.
The fact that he talked about Kashmiriyat in the land of the proud Dogras was nothing but a deliberate attempt of the BJP to ridicule and taunt the people of Jammu province or an attempt at telling them that they had no place in their scheme of things and that the BJP was more secular than the Congress.
It's no wonder that the people of Jammu province are feeling completely abandoned and are chaffing. The BJP has to review its Kashmir policy, which is not only fraught with dangerous ramifications but which has all the potential of provoking a massive revolt in Jammu province. Jammu province is part and parcel of the polity and it deserves equal treatment with Kashmir at all levels and in all spheres. The BJP would commit a grave blunder if it continued to behave in the fashion it has been behaving since 2014.
The people of Jammu province do not want more than what they deserve in the government, in the administration, in the tourism and service sectors, in the assembly and Lok Sabha, in the financial and technical and professional institutions and infrastructure; they only want their share without harming the interests of other regions of the state. In fact, they only want the BJP to fulfill the promises it made to them both in the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. They are fed up with the BJP's hollow statements; they want action on the ground and warn that they would teach it a lesson in case the BJP failed to meet their demands and respect their political urges and aspirations. The fact of the matter is that they want the BJP to behave as the Kashmiri parties behave. They also want the BJP to compensate for the losses they suffered at the hands of New Delhi and the Kashmiri ruling elite after 1947 and they say this is possible only if it takes special care of their general political and economic rights and interests.
Time is running out and running out very fast. It would be in its own interest if the BJP appreciates the feeling and needs of the constituency which voted for it failing which the results would be disastrous. It would not be out of place to mention here that the marginalized and neglected people of Jammu province are getting the maximum possible attention in the social networking sites and all those who are making optimum use of facebook, twitter and whatsapp are cataloguing the woos of the people of Jammu province, pleading the Jammu cause and denouncing the BJP's Kashmir policy as well as policy towards Jammu province.
