Jammu, May 28: Continuing with five and half year old biodiversity awareness initiative by way of weekly outdoor Tree Talks, 419th Mycorhizeal Tree Talk hosted for students and teachers of Vijay Memorial Institute Ganderbal, Srinagar. According to press release, O P Sharma, Director Ecology Environment and Remote Sensing while interacting with young minds shared that Biologist-Mohd Hijri focusing on impending phosphorus crisis in agricultural lands tells that due to soil erosion ,degradation of mountain forests ,phosphorus finds its way to wetlands and aquatic ecosystems and leads to algal blooms causing toxicity in water resources. He further said, " Phosphorus is essential components of cell membranes and DNA ,required for cellular communication and metabolism but only 15% gets absorbed in plants ,85% goes waste .To feed to 9 billion population by 2050 ,we need to secure more absorption of phosphorus by plant roots and it will be possible only through fungal associations engineered in nature". Forest tree health depends on ectomycorhizeal and endomycorhizeal associations in nature and this is linked to intact forest soils,control of soil erosion and conservation of soil micro-organisms said Muzaffar Bazaz . Sanjay Verma ,Karaipak ,Ghulam Moihuddin ,Ishtiyaq Abdul also shared their inputs on tree diversity of Wangat valley and putforth an idea for establishing Edible & Medicinal plant Nursery in the valley . |
