Early Times Report JAMMU, May 28: Even as we see it happening routinely on our highways, the alleged extraction of bribe by traffic police personnel from truckers, which was at play on Sidhra road here today, was caught on camera by an Early Times lensman. Even the high-profile IAS and IPS officers, who take pride that they are the products of country's top competitive examination and deserve the higher pay and other emoluments as compared to other services, have miserably failed to eliminate this alleged corruption. Ironically, some have themselves landed in the net of anti-graft agencies for running the 'industry of corruption'. Down the line, the proceeds collected at traffic police nakas are shared by all, police sources alleged. Following complaints of harassment of truckers and other load carriers on Sidhra road by traffc cops, ET lensman today clandestinely caught them on camera while harassing vehicle operators and then allegedly extracting bribe from them. "Traffic police corruption benefits from the scale of transport on a particular road. Multiply the estimated hundreds of trucks that ply on Sidhra road by Rs 100-200 per vehicle daily bribe if all his papers are in order, and we will get the astounding daily bribe figure," sources said. And, if the papers were not in order, the bribe amount could be more, the sources added. It is regretted that even BJP-PDP government in the state seems to be oblivious to the problem as it has so far taken no concrete steps to deal with the menace. |
