Thousands of fish die in Mendhar pond, Fisheries Deptt in slumber

Poonch, June 27: Thousands of fish have been reportedly killed in Mendhar pond by using poisonous substances by some miscreants while as Fisheries Department seems to be in deep slumber in the district as no preventive measures have been taken so far to check the gruesome incident, the sources said here today.
Eye witnesses said that some locals use poisonous substances including bleaching powder and other insecticides to kill the fish in the pond which they reportedly use for eating purposes which is against the norms and this gruesome act of killing thousands of fish have been continuing since long but the Fisheries Department has miserably by failed to keep a check on this development or take any preventive measures to stop this practice, they added. In some cases they even use electric shocks to kill the fish, they further added.
People of the area have lambasted Assistant Director Fisheries Poonch and concerned inspector for their lackadaisical approach towards the situation and they told Early Times that they suspect the officials being hand in glove with the miscreants who have been using such gruesome methods to take the toll of fish for eating purposes. They condemned the unnatural act and warned the department of dire consequences the said practice continues further any more. The miscreants indulged in the practice should be booked and put behind the bars they added District Development Commissioner MH Malik has expressed grief over the gruesome and un natural practice of killing fish in Mendhar. He directed for lodging an FIR, the sources in DDC Office said.
Meanwhile Mendhar youth club chairman advocate Nadeem Khan has vehemently condemned the unnatural practice of killing fish and warned the elements to refrain from the practice. He also urged the Fisheries Department to take preventive measures to stop the practice as there was great resentment brewing among the masses in the area.
