Curfew, restrictions, strike continue to paralyze life in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 23: For the 15th consecutive day normal life was paralyzed in Kashmir due to the enforcement of curfew, curfew like restrictions and strike call given by the separatists.
Meanwhile, the situation remained by and large peaceful in the valley with very few incidents of stone pelting taking place during the day. Stone pelting incidents were reported from some of the places in the valley with the intensity of the same being very low.
The curfew imposed in the Kashmir valley on July 9 remained in force in seven police stations of Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian and Kupwara districts. The curfew was relaxed in areas other than police stations of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Kralkhud and Maisuma in Srinagar district. The curfew was also lifted from Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.
Reports said that curfew was re-imposed in the Batmaloo area of the Srinagar after clashes broke out in the area between groups of agitating youth and police as well as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The agitated youth resorted to heavy stone pelting on the forces personnel with the same being retaliated by police and CRPF personnel.
Police and CRPF personnel chased the protesters in order to bring the situation under control in the Batmaloo area. After failing to rein in the protesters the police and CRPF personnel lobbed dozens of smoke shells on the youth protesting in the area. The protests were going on in the area by the time this report was filed. Some persons sustained injuries during the clashes.
Reports of stone pelting have also come in from some areas of the different districts of the Kashmir valley. These protests were carried out in Reki Chowk, Nowgam, Karan Nagar, Chanapora in Srinagar; Fatehpora in Ganderbal; Kralpora, Chadoora in Budgam; Bomai, Sopore in Baramulla; Padgampora, Kakapora, Tahab, Samboora, Awantipora in Pulwama and Sirigufwara in Anantnag district.
Reports said that police and CRPF personnel chased the protesters in most of the areas. Smoke shells were also lobbed in some of the areas in order to bring the situation under control. Some of the protesters along with the police as well as CRPF personnel sustained injuries during the day long protests.
In the uptown areas there was skeletal movement of private transport on the roads with public transport continuing to be off the roads. Some of the shops could also be seen open in some of the areas with the majority of the shopkeepers keeping their shops closed. ATMs of the banks could be seen open in many areas with people withdrawing cash from such ATMs.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout the Kashmir valley remained peaceful and under control, today. The spokesman said that there were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from Karan Nagar, Reck Chowk, Chanapora in Srinagar, Fatehpora in Ganderbal, Chadoora in Budgam, Bomai in Sopore, Kakapora, Tahab in Pulwama, Srigufwara in Anantnag and Padgampora Bahu in Awantipora.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 50 civilians have been killed in firing of police and CRPF at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests.
