Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 15: The Army today conducted flag march in historic Lal chowk, where business activities remained paralysed for the 69th day today due to ongoing unrest that has left 80 civilians dead and over 8,600 others injured since July 9. Scores of Army vehicles, mounted with red flags, and troops on foot marched through the Lal chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, Srinagar, besides M A Road and Presidency road. The troops could then be seen deployed on all the roads, which were closed with barbed wires, leading to Ghanta ghar in Lal chowk and MA road. However, around half-an-hour later, the Army was again replaced by paramilitary forces and state police. This is for the first time that the Army conducted a flag march in Lal Chowk since the violence-hit Kashmir valley on July 9, a day after the death of Hizbul Mujhadeen commander Burhan Wani and two other militants in an encounter in Anantnag. The Defence Minister had already said that the Army has to guard the borders and not deal the law and order situation. However, the Army chief , who visited Kashmir valley couple of times since the unrest, has assured the state government that the force will provide assistance to restore normalcy in the valley. Meanwhile, the Army has already been deployed on the highway besides in South Kashmir, which is the worst-hit area in terms of loss of lives in the ongoing unrest
